Hybrid Work:
This is a hybrid work position in Calgary, Alberta and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility the remaining 40% of the work week. This hybrid work plan allows for critically important learning, collaboration and networking with our colleagues. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this role is a key member of the Financial Reporting & Compliance team within the Controller's group at WestJet. The successful candidate will research, analyze and record complex accounting transactions, assist in the preparation of consolidated financial statements and other regulatory disclosures, and provide specialized accounting guidance as needed to stakeholders throughout the WestJet Group.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and prepare analyses to understand emerging accounting pronouncements and assess and analyze their impact on WestJet
  • Provide technical accounting research for accounting issues arising from new business transactions or initiatives.
  • As required, review contracts for the identification of leases and account for leases in accordance with IFRS 16. Assist with forecasting and budgeting for lease impacts.
  • Responsible for accounting for complex transactions, for example: hedging arrangements, revenue contracts & contract amendments, leases, provisions, share capital transactions, acquisition accounting as required.
  • Ensure timely completion of the period-end close for select processes.
  • Complete quarterly and annual mandatory surveys such as StatsCan surveys and. US Bureau of Economic Analysis among others.
  • Assist in the preparation of the consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements and disclosures in accordance with IFRS, as well as the MD&A, Audit Committee reporting, as required
  • Act as a main point of contact to the external auditors and for various WestJet internal stakeholders to coordinate quarterly reviews and annual audits.
  • Advise and present on technical accounting topics within Finance and to WestJet Group stakeholders on an ad hoc basis.

Education and Experience:

  • University Degree in Business or a related field, plus five years of relevant experience.
  • Completion of an accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) is required.
  • Strong technical accounting background in IFRS and experience with complex accounting issues.
  • Attention to detail, organized and thorough, with a desire for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to handle pressure and meet tight timelines in a collaborative environment with a high volume of activity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • A highly motivated and energetic individual with the ability to take responsibility for initiatives and produce results.
  • JDE or other ERP experience would be an asset.
