ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Energy Marketing & Trading team is seeking passionate and driven professionals to join our Trading Development Program.
This program offers each successful member the opportunity to rotate through various trade desks within our Energy Marketing & Trading organization. Each rotation will allow you to expand your knowledge, build on your skill set, and develop personal networks within TransAlta. You will rotate through various trade desks such as Eastern North America Power, Western North America Power, Alberta, or Natural Gas. Individual rotations will focus on trading analytics, asset optimization, and portfolio management, on real-time trading and scheduling.
This is a temporary 2-year position based at our head office in Calgary on the Trade floor. Unfortunately, due to the nature of these roles they are ineligble for remote work.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Members of the program will complete six-month job rotations to experience a variety of roles within Energy Marketing & Trading at TransAlta and gain exposure to various lines of business and energy markets
During each rotation, responsibilities will vary, and you will collaborate with your leader to develop specific performance objectives. You will be assessed and receive quarterly feedback as well as at the end of each rotation
Rotations will be with the flowing trading desks: Eastern North America Power, Western North America Power, Emissions, Natural Gas, or Risk Management. Individual rotations focus on trading analytics, supply and demand modeling, forecasting, asset optimization and portfolio management, or on real-time trading and scheduling
The following is a brief description of each desk's operations:
Eastern North America Power: The East Power desk manages TransAlta's eastern assets, flows physical power on its short-term desk and engages in proprietary trading. The desk maintains multiple models and creates price forecasts off fundamentals within the Eastern US and Canada.
Western North America Power: The West Power desk optimizes generating facilities and physical transmission, trades electricity and natural gas as well as a suite of congestion products. Day-to-day responsibilities could include analysis of market policy, business practices and fundamentals, and scheduling and trading of short-term power.
Emissions: The Emissions desk trades and manages carbon credits position on behalf of TransAlta as well as on a proprietary basis. Markets of focus include Alberta's TIER Market, WCI cap and trade markets, REC markets and RGGI. Day-to-day responsibilities could include policy analysis, supply and demand modeling of emissions markets, research into other emissions markets, and ad-hoc quantitative analysis.\
Natural Gas: The Natural Gas desk is a proprietary trading group responsible for successfully deploying and managing meaningful positions. Day-to-day responsibilities include fundamental supply and demand modeling for natural gas markets in Canada and the USA, trading various cash locations, and strengthening the desk's analytical and technological capabilities.
Risk Management: The Risk Management team provides reporting, independent oversight, and analytical support for commodity transaction valuation and integration. Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with the research, development, maintenance, and back-testing of models used for valuation, risk assessment, and stress testing of structured deals and portfolios.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Completion of a bachelor's degree, preferably in an analytical field such as finance, engineering, economics, mathematics, statistics, physics, or computer science
Prior experience in the energy trading industry is not required but beneficial; we welcome all applicants from different educational backgrounds and work experience to apply (recent university graduates to numerous years of work experience)
Excellent Microsoft Excel skills required; proficiency in Python, SQL, or other programming languages would be extremely advantageous
Possess a competitive attitude, independent thinker, self-starter and results-oriented approach to work
Confident in articulating and defending positions that challenge the consensus
Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple work tasks
Positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and readiness to take initiative
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently with minimal guidance
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
