The Opportunity

This position is field based and works with the Abbott Diabetes Care Division. We're focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We're revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.

What You'll Do

Drive proactive engagement and advocacy efforts to advance the company's strategic goals by:

  • Developing and maintaining strategic relations with key external stakeholders and decision makers from Ministries across government, health technology assessment (HTA) bodies, healthcare professionals (HCPs), key opinion leaders (KOLs), patients/patient association groups (PAGs) (e.g., Breakthrough T1D and Diabetes Canada), and industry leaders to demonstrate Abbott as a leader in the industry and a trusted partner - positively shaping the business environment on behalf of the customers we serve by collaborating with government and other key stakeholders

  • Monitoring political, economic, and social factors affecting public policy that could impact the organization. Provide insights and collaborate with internal teams to develop and advocate for company positions.

  • Developing and implementing strategies and tactics to support all aspects of government relations in Western Canada. Lead the development and implementation of integrated strategies and manage resources such as external agencies and budgets. Lead activities of outside business organizations and consultants with respect to advocacy involving key stakeholders to advance business goals and positively influence. Serve as a resource to internal businesses/functions.

  • Acting as the organization's primary liaison with government bodies, policy makers, HTA organizations and patient association groups. Ensure regular, proactive communication to align external activities with organization's objectives to create positive impact to customers. Provide ADC with informed direction, guidance, and leadership in its relationship with all parties.

  • Developing unique strategies to support the introduction of innovative products to the market, working closely with access, and commercial teams to align messaging and create value across the system.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant filed such as Public Policy, HTA, Clinical Epidemiology, Health Economics, Political Science, Communications, Business Administration or Healthcare Management.

  • Master's Degree or PhD (preferred): Public Policy, Health Economics, Clinical Epidemiology, HTA, Business Administration (MBA), or a healthcare-related field to demonstrate deeper understanding of both public and policy and the healthcare landscape.

  • Additional Certifications (optional but beneficial): Professional certifications in stakeholder management, public affairs, or government relations.

  • Minimum 5 to 8 years of experience.

  • Proven track record in stakeholder relations, government relations, public affairs, or external affairs within the healthcare, medical device, or pharmaceutical industry.

  • Candidates should have demonstrated success in working with key external stakeholders like government officials, HTA bodies, healthcare professionals and patient associations groups.

  • Strong understanding of public policy, HTA, and regulatory environments. Experience engaging with government policy makers and advocacy organizations is critical.

  • Strategic relationship-building: significant experience in building and maintaining long term professional relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • Ability to work under pressure and act with urgency: demonstrated success in working in fast-paced environments as responding to urgent matters and managing evolving priorities are crucial.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills: proven ability to develop high quality presentations, craft clear messaging, and communicate effectively with both external and internal stakeholders, including senior leadership.

  • Project management and resource oversight: experience in managing external agencies or consultants, budgets, and multistakeholder projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.

  • Healthcare industry knowledge: familiarity with the healthcare ecosystem at a national or provincial level, particularly with payers, healthcare providers, reimbursement, and market access frameworks. Previous experience working within a pharmaceutical, medical device or biotechnology company is highly preferred.

  • Proven proactive work ethic: highly motivated self-starter with experience working in roles that require a high level of proactivity, providing regular updates and ensuring alignment with the organization's objectives without needing to be asked.

  • PC literate including Word, PowerPoint, Excel skills.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (~10%+).

  • Proven leadership skills.
