Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of accounting duties related to month-end closing, managing accounts payable and receivable, preparing financial statements, investment and intercompany reconciliations, loan amortization schedules, and year-end audit assistance. This position will ensure accuracy and completeness of financial statements and accounting records in accordance with the ASPE and/or IFRS and company policies. Additionally, this position will be responsible for assisting with other entities within the group and any ad-hoc projects as requested.

This position demands a high degree of organization and attention to detail as it involves multiple tight deadlines. In addition, it is important to protect and maintain confidentiality of all financial and operational information.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Liaise with accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely and accurate recording and reporting of transactions.
  • Perform month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing activities including reconciliations, journal entry postings, accruals leading to preparation of financial statements.
  • Reconcile and post monthly statements for multiple properties from the property manager.
  • Prepare and file monthly GST returns for multiple entities.
  • Provide variance analysis for the operating and capital expenditure.
  • Manage and reconcile intercompany interest and transactions ensuring timely and accurate recording and reporting.
  • Prepare working papers, reconciliations, and schedules for year-end audits ensuring deliverables are completed in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure proper accounting treatment and reporting of transactions including review of outstanding related party balances.
  • Continuously review and improve accounting processes and procedures to ensure compliance with ASPE/IFRS and company policies.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior accounting staff as needed.
  • Assist with other entities within the group as needed.
  • Provide support for any ad-hoc projects as requested by management.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills when dealing with customers, staff & management.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Highly organized and able to multitask effectively and work under changing priorities.
  • Good communication skills within a team environment.
  • Initiative to isolate and solve problems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
EDUCATION & KNOWLEDGE:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance.
  • CPA designation or in final stages of completion
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting in a large organization, including managing accounts payable and receivable, preparing financial statements, and preparing working papers, reconciliations, and schedules for year-end audits.
  • Strong understanding of ASPE/IFRS and financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience with investment and intercompany transactions, loan amortization, and month-end closing procedures.
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting software (PeopleSoft, D365, Yardi).
