Position Overview: The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for two Postdoctoral Fellows. These roles focus on creating and enhancing the curriculum for micro-credential courses related to the blue economy, science communication, and climate change within ocean sciences. The successful candidates will collaborate as a team, supporting faculty and staff to develop innovative instructional materials and course modules integrating cutting-edge research and pedagogical best practices. Instructing the developed courses is also expected, as well as involvement with related opportunities that may help attract more resources for the program's expansion. Positions are subject to funding. Currently, we expect one position to be for a minimum of 12 months and the other to be for a minimum of 24 months.
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development: Design and develop instructional materials and course modules in the areas of blue economy, science communication, and climate change within ocean sciences.
Collaborative Instruction: Work closely with IOF faculty and other departments to integrate interdisciplinary approaches and ensure cohesive and comprehensive course offerings.
Pedagogical Innovation: Incorporate diverse teaching methods and assessment tools to enhance student learning and engagement, primarily online.
Course Implementation: Collaborate in implementing and evaluating new and revised courses, ensuring alignment with UBC's academic standards and the Institute's goals.
Student Engagement: Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment, encouraging active student participation and collaboration.
Professional Development: Stay current with the latest developments in ocean sciences and educational practices and incorporate this knowledge into curriculum design.
Required Qualifications:
A PhD in ocean sciences, environmental science, education, or a related field within the past five years.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.
Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and instructional design, preferably in higher education.
Knowledge of educational methodologies such as experiential and project-based learning is an asset.
Strong background in the blue economy, science communication, and climate change as they relate to ocean sciences.
Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
Commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in educational settings.
