About the Position

The Senior Operations Accountant (SOA) is a leader of an accounting group and reports to the Assistant Director of Accounting Operations. Utilizing hands-on accounting experience and an in-depth understanding of accounting principles and organizational practices, the SOA will perform complex accounting activities and process development. Responsibilities include, but not limited to the management of the accounts payable and receivable team, accountability for the accounts payable sub-ledger, reconciliation of the sub-ledger to the general ledger and other liability accounts, ensuring adequate internal controls are in place, and performing analysis and reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions:

  • Prepares the remittance proposal to ensure the completion of accounts payable and revenue process
  • Provides analyses of the accounts payable process through verification of the invoices to the expense and revenue coding and amount used
  • Determines that the relevant taxes are recorded and the resulting tax rebates are claimed appropriately.
  • Manages monthly closing of the financial records and posting on month end information to ensure the accuracy of financial statements
  • Masters the Salvation Army policies to ensure expenditures claims, accrual and journal entries are appropriate and accurate as well as revenue accounts are correctly coded
  • Evaluates scenarios where internal policies are in conjunction with applicable legislation
  • Prepare annual audit schedule in accordance with the requirements of the external audits
  • Develops new processes to promote efficiencies and improve internal controls
  • Implements and maintains systems and policies to support new processes
  • Advises and mentor accountants about policy, tax law and accounting principles
  • Identifies AP and AR related errors and instructs the team of the required corrections

Manage partnership with ministry units and external clients:

  • Communicates and follows up with clients concerning outstanding issues related to accounting operations
  • Remain fluent with and understand Salvation Army policies to ensure accounting transactions are in line with policy and procedure.
  • Initiate and maintain ongoing communications with clients, treating them with respect and courtesy at all times.
  • Develop an understanding of client requirements, providing detailed solutions and explanations to queries.

Manage staff:

  • Plans, assigns and directs on a daily basis work for the staff accountants.
  • Coaches and appraises performance of the staff who report directly to the SOA.
  • Hires and trains team members.
  • Address complaints and resolves problems within the team.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor Degree in Finance/ Accounting stream.
  • The SOA must be enrolled in CPA program PEP.
  • Three years but less than five years in full cycle accounting (AP/AR/GL).

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • High quality Excel spreadsheet skills
  • Excellent knowledge of Word
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $50,302-$62,878, with the ability to progress to a maximum of $75,454. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
