Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. Job Overview

Wawanesa Insurance is looking for an exceptional candidate to join our Insurance Risk Management team as either an Actuarial Consultant or Senior Actuarial Consultant. Working under minimal supervision, the Actuarial Consultant of Insurance Risk Management contributes to the accurate and timely measurement, monitoring, reporting and control of enterprise-wide insurance risks and associated escalation and governance process.

Job Responsibilities

Insurance Risk Management

  • Insurance risk is defined as the risk of loss resulting from Pricing & Underwriting Risk, Reserving Risk, and Catastrophic risk.
  • Provides oversight and challenge to the effectiveness and consistency of enterprise-wide insurance risk and actuarial practices via quarterly independent actuarial Pricing, Reserving, and Reinsurance reviews.

Actuarial and Statistical Methods

  • Performs independent rate indications, pricing segmentation analysis and reserving valuations of major business lines.
  • Supports the review of key insurance risk models to minimize model risk, including actuarial pricing, budget and forecasting, and reinsurance catastrophe models.

Analytical

  • Researches, extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant sources, and assesses data quality
  • Supports the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad-hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with minimal support from peers and leaders
  • Evaluates procedures and processes, and recommend alternatives or improvements

Process Improvement/Efficiency

  • Evaluates existing processes to find areas for increased efficiency
  • Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application of solutions
  • Develops creative approaches to solve complex issues and assesses impacts of solution options

Industry

  • Recommends actions that should be taken in response to industry news and trends
  • Encouraged to represent Wawanesa in industry research, professional standards, and technical working groups and shares insights internally with relevant teams

Commitment to Learning

  • Commits to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery in competencies
  • Focuses learning activities on bringing new knowledge and skills to team and sharing this new expertise with team members

Stakeholder Management

  • Provides regular project updates to stakeholders. Anticipates obstacles and raises them in advance; Proposes possible solutions to obstacles.

Project Management

  • Leads projects from beginning to end, including training and documentation. Delegates effectively, including following up where appropriate. Includes implementation of final product.

Mentorship

  • Actively contributes to the mentorship, training and development of actuarial analysts

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or other related field of study
  • More than four years of actuarial experience an asset
  • 7 CAS exams or ACAS designation an asset
  • Working programming knowledge of R is an asset
  • Experience in Pricing or Modelling considered an asset
