Job Summary
Dalhousie University's Faculty of Science is a research-intensive faculty that thrives on inclusive research excellence, strategic partnerships, and stakeholder engagement. Reporting to the Dean, the Director, Finance is the senior position in the Faculty of Science responsible for financial management activities. The incumbent plans, analyzes, manages, and reports on budget administration and business operations by developing, maintaining and monitoring internal administrative systems to facilitate effective, efficient and sustainable operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees the Faculty of Science budget, including the annual preparation process, quarterly reviews, and regular analysis, projections and reporting.
  • Critically reviews budget submissions from department heads and directors, and provides financially relevant advice, direction and guidance.
  • Prepares and presents various financial analyses and reports to support Faculty level committees, business planning, and decision-making.
  • Oversees financial management and administration of the Faculty's Research Centres and Core Facilities by designing, implementing and monitoring internal administrative systems to facilitate effective, efficient, and sustainable unit operations.
  • Builds and maintains relationships internally and externally on matters relating to Faculty of Science finances or other practices and issues of interest.
  • Manages Dean's Office Finance Clerk, including performance and developmental coaching.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree with a professional accounting designation such as a CPA, and seven years' related financial management experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication (verbal and written), analytical skills and competence using information technology tools.
  • Strong leadership abilities along with supervisory / management experience.
  • Must be able to exercise initiative and independent judgement in a complex organizational environment.
  • Highly developed planning and project management skills and a commitment to continuing professional development.
