Job Summary
Dal Innovates is the strategic lead for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) programming within Dalhousie, delivering I&E programs with a focus on impact-driven innovation, deep science and technology or commercialization of research to students and researchers at Dalhousie and other universities across Atlantic Canada. Reporting to the Dal Innovates Finance Manager, the Financial Administrator will support and facilitate the dynamic innovation offerings at Dalhousie (Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), Lab2Market, IdeaHUB, and other programs as they are introduced.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepares expenditure claims for government reimbursement agencies.
  • Completes regular financial review of accounts/programs and provides updates, explaining variances and anomalies, for CDL, Dal Innovates, and other I&E offerings.
  • Provides support for managing complex funding relationships with multiple funding agencies and donors, including the provincial government, federal government, private donors, corporate partners etc.
  • Participates in audits on various claims or other ad hoc audits, which can include sourcing and relaying expense information, downloading and organizing payroll data, liaising with both government and Dalhousie administrators and maintaining an organized database.
  • Accumulates and prepares data for financial and metrics reporting for multiple stakeholders including Donors, Senior University Administration, and Government officials.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in business, finance, or accounting, plus three years' experience in positions requiring financial management and administration as well as programming and coordination (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated experience with managing program/project budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing financial reporting/metrics.
  • Experience with similar responsibilities which require multi-tasking, adapting quickly, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Above average ability and experience with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with process mapping / troubleshooting processes.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, being able to regularly collaborate and adapt, with above average written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience preparing expenditure claims.
  • Project management training and/or accounting designation.
