Job Summary
The department of Housing and Campus Connections of Dalhousie University consists of Residence Operations (Facilities Management, Front Desk staff and Security for 2400 students residing across 16 residences), Conference Services, Off Campus Housing, University Food Services (residence dining, retail food, catering and snack vending), DalCard Business Operations and UPass. Reporting to the Director, Finance and Administration, Housing and Campus Connections and Ancillary Services, the Financial Analyst, also performs the Financial Analyst role for Ancillary Services, the Bookstores, the Arts Centre, Parking Services and the Print Centre.
Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the financial analysis for Housing and Campus Connections and Ancillary Services, with revenues of more than $57.8 million.
  • Performs high level analysis of trends, assessment of risks and changes in financial results for senior management and for regular decision making to support the cost recovery budget.
  • Establishes and implements budget modelling and reporting guidelines and formats for the thirty-three units that make up Housing and Campus Connections and Ancillary Services.
  • Responsible for developing methods, procedures and process improvements to summarize and analyze financial results in response to internal and external ad-hoc requests. Collaborate with management to formulate policies including advising on potential strategies to implement per the analyzed data.
  • Initial point of contact for year-end questions and manages various year-end adjustments, journal entries, and reconciliations on a timely basis to ensure accurate information is always available. Works with the auditors by providing financial information.
  • Identifies areas of financial risk through normal operational activity or unforeseen items and advises and participates in contract negotiations.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, plus a minimum of five years' of progressively responsible financial experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and confidential matters with excellent judgement, discretion and tact, and multi-task with frequent interruptions.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in a high-volume, quick turnaround, deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.
  • Exceptional Microsoft suite and experience with a variety of database systems.
