Job Summary
The Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine (APMPM) is a large, complex clinical and academic department that provides patient care, delivers education and conducts research in the areas of anesthesia, pain management and perioperative medicine. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working with Department Head, the Managing Director of Finance is responsible for the financial planning and management of all accounts related to the Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine to meet its clinical, research, education and administrative functions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop annual budget and manage all financial accounts to maintain the activities of the Department, including budget allocations from Dalhousie and the health authorities, and funding from government under the Clinical Academic Funding Plan (CAFP).
  • Provide strategic and operational advice, support and recommendations to Head, COO and Managing/Medical Directors regarding financial performance and strategies designed to support departmental strategic objectives.
  • Oversee bi-weekly physician compensation payments working closely with scheduling team and leadership, aligned with practice plan guidelines.
  • Produce regular FTE, financial, billing and clinical data reports for Head, COO, Managing Directors, senior leadership, Executive Committee, to support decision-making, and to meet CAFP reporting requirements.
  • Oversee the Department's billings functions for patient insured medical services submitted to the Province of Nova Scotia and to patients/third parties for elective and non-insured services.
  • Manage team of Finance Assistants and Billing Clerks, which includes, hiring, performance management, etc.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person at work location (VG hospital, 10th floor)
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree with five to seven years' financial administration and management experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of budgets and financial systems.
  • Strong communications skills, with ability to work collaboratively with administrators and physicians, and to translate complex financial information into clear, user-friendly reports, tailored to different audiences.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with ability to strategize solutions to financial and operational matters and anticipate needs as required.
  • Strong data analytical skills and comfort with entering, gathering and analyzing data from various information systems.
Assets
  • Master's degree.
  • Accounting designation.
  • Management and/or supervisory experience.
  • Experience working in an academic health care environment.
