Job Description:

As a Rehabilitation Consultant (RC), you will be making a difference in our customers' lives and in return, we actively support your professional development. As a Rehabilitation Consultant: You will be responsible to work in partnership with our Disability Case Managers (DCMs) in the management of disability claims towards resolution. The focus of the RC is to provide high quality rehabilitation services in collaboration with our stakeholders including plan members (employees), plan sponsors (employers), internal partners and the member's health care team. Providing effective health and rehabilitation services contributes to client satisfaction and retention of group disability business. This role is multidimensional and is focused on determining the right interventions to support recovery, return to work, vocational planning, and reduced durations for workplace absences.

What will you do?

  • Engage plan members through open and respectful verbal and written communication to understand the medical, social, and personal dimensions of their workplace absence.

  • Conduct assessments to obtain information and ensure a complete understanding of the absence and types of support required to assist with vocational planning, in keeping with the terms of the group insurance contract.

  • Identify, actively assess and manage medical and non-medical influencing factors pre- and post-disability, functional capability, as well as restrictions and limitations, to better understand what support is needed to impact on and achieve return to work focused outcomes.

  • Collaborate and provide high quality customer service to our internal and external partners, such as: plan members, their health care practitioners, plan sponsors, DCMs, internal partners, and other stakeholders (lawyers, etc.).

  • Create action plans and communicate progress towards recovery, while maintaining confidentiality, privacy, and addressing business needs.

  • Develop and maintain outcome-focused case management plans to help clients return to work.

  • Empower the client to take ownership of their health and recovery by providing them the tools and resources.

  • Contribute to a dynamic work environment by identifying opportunities to improve and processes and customer service delivery.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.

  • Post secondary education with preference in Human and Health Science/Psychology or Sociology/Disability Management or vocational background.

  • Regulated health care background, or

  • Training in a vocational rehabilitation profession

    • CCRC (Canadian Certified Rehabilitation Counselor) / RRP (Registered Rehabilitation Professional) / CVRP (Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Professional) designation or working to achieve one.

    • NIDMAR Certification - Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) or Certified Disability

  • Group disability insurance experience.

  • Experience with case management of complex claims.

  • Excellent listening skills, capacity for empathy and ability to influence others.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to adapt communication style for a range of needs.

  • Effective interpersonal skills including negotiation and facilitation.

  • Resourceful and collaborative with the ability to work independently and with self-direction.

  • Able to manage time effectively and efficiently.

  • Proactive, creative, and innovative case management skills.

  • Stellar customer service skills.

  • Computer literacy/savvy; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, MS Teams), SharePoint, Internet, etc. (savvy)

  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.

Where you will work?

  • We are proud to be a hybrid organization that offers our employees the choice and flexibility to work from both the office and virtually based on the needs of the business, our clients and you! This role will require you to be in the office at a minimum of once per week and at any time the business need is best served in the office. This means that sometimes you will work in the office and sometimes you will work at home, with the frequency of each defined through discussion between you and your leader.

  • You will be provided with the tools that you need to be effective, wherever you are working (e.g., laptop, headset, etc.). When you work virtually, you will be expected to maintain certain professional standards for your workspace, including but not limited to a stable internet connection and a private place to work, in accordance with Sun Life's Virtual Working Framework.
