What you will do

The Vice President, Finance (VPF) is pivotal in providing operational and technical support to the organization. The insights and decisions made by the VPF have a direct impact on the organization's financial strategies. Reporting to the President/CEO, the VPF assists on all strategic and tactical matters, from budget management to pursuit of new business opportunities.

A Day in the Life

Reporting to the President/CEO, your job duties include:

  • Providing financial oversight and guidance to wholly owned subsidiaries
  • Assist in performing all tasks necessary to achieve Det'on Cho's mission and vision and help execute staff succession and growth plans.
  • Manage the Finance team and ensure team members are performing and receiving direction, training and development as required.
  • Work with the President/CEO on the strategic vision, including fostering and cultivating stakeholder relationships and assisting in developing and negotiating contracts.
  • Participate in developing new business, specifically assisting the CEO and operations in identifying new opportunities, drafting prospective opportunity budgets, and determining the cost-effectiveness of prospective service delivery
  • Assess the benefits of all prospective contracts and advise the Executive Team on program design and implementation matters
  • Participate in the review and evaluation of proposals and submissions
  • Ensure adequate controls are installed and maintained for operational efficiency and the passing of audits
  • Manage the accounting operations, including the review of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and project costing
  • Provide Operations with an operating budget and work with the operations to ensure business units' success through cost analysis support and compliance with all contractual and program requirements.
  • Interpreting legislative and business-specific rules and regulations to ensure compliance with all federal, territorial, local and contractual guidelines
  • Ensuring that all government regulations and requirements are disseminated to appropriate personnel and monitoring compliance
  • Oversees the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization, including organizing revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational and contract budgets
  • Oversee all purchasing and payroll activity for staff and participants
  • Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization
  • Ensure that financial policies and procedures are implemented and effectively monitored
  • Coordinate and oversee activities related to all required audits, ensuring information is gathered and delivered in a timely manner, including the preparation of the annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and federal, territorial and other required supplementary schedules and information
  • Attend Board and Subcommittee meetings, including being lead staff on the Audit/Finance Risk Committee
  • Monitor banking activities of the organization and ensure adequate cash flow to meet the organization's needs
  • Oversee administration and financial reporting of the organization's Pension, TFSA and RSP Plans
  • Work with Human Resources to investigate cost-effective benefit plans and other fringe benefits which Det'on Cho may offer employees and potential employees with the goal of attracting and retaining qualified individuals
  • Assist HR in the design, implementation, and timely calculations of wage incentives, bonuses, and salaries for staff
  • Oversee the production of monthly reports, as well as financial statements and cash flow projections for use by Executive management, as well the Audit/Finance Risk Committee and Board of Directors
  • Oversee business insurance plans and health care coverage analysis
  • Oversee the maintenance of the inventory of all fixed assets
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the finance team
  • Manage financial systems and administrative activities in accordance with relevant financial legislation and Det'on Cho policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO

What You Bring

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree at an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience
  • The incumbent is expected to have gained the required competencies through the completion of a CPA Professional Designation.
  • Providing verifiable background checks such as references and credentials
  • Six to ten years of financial experience and management experience with the day-to-day financial operations of a small to medium-sized organization
  • Prior experience coordinating finance for multiple group divisions
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be accepted
  • Familiarity with Yellowknives Dene language, culture and way of life would be considered assets.
