Our Computational Techniques branch is looking for an Economist!

The Economist will be developing advanced methods (quantitative and qualitative) for informed decision-making regarding nuclear economics with a particular focus on research, theoretical and applied with policy relevance and multi-disciplinary studies that span multiple technical areas. The Economist will draw upon the analytical techniques to contribute to:

  • Feasibility studies: Evaluating a set of technologies for a given application. Assessing the benefits and disadvantages of each option and recommend a path forward.
  • Economic studies: Determining costs of new technologies in various stages of development. Assessing market factors and how they influence the final cost of a technology. Considering the clean energy transition and the role of economics at industrial, provincial, and national levels.
  • Policy studies: Performing environment policy formulation to understand the associated economic implications of the potential role of nuclear energy.
  • Systems analysis: analytical techniques to complete option analysis studies of complex systems.
  • Problem structuring: Developing, testing, and applying tools or methods to inform stakeholders in objective development and improve the decision-making process.

What you will be doing!

  • Collaborating with, and lead, a team of technical experts to perform economic analyses assessing the implications of various decisions at a system level. Involved in economic analyses to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of the system.
  • Assessing economic, social and political implications related to various nuclear technologies/applications.
  • Contributing to national and international collaborations in the area of nuclear economics.
  • Preparing proposals for Federal Nuclear Science and Technology and Commercial Projects.
  • Monitoring, and managing, project progress and budget.
  • Preparing reports and manuscripts for publications based on the research conducted.
  • Providing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to the Manager and Customers, where applicable.
  • Working on any other projects undertaken by the Operations Research Section, as directed by the Section Head and Branch Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.


What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in Science Honours in Economics with 10 years experience, or Master's of Science degree in Economics with 5 years experience from a university of recognized standing. PhD of Science in Economic preferred for a senior position.
  • Experience
    • Solid experience in conducting economic analysis and modelling of various emerging and disruptive technologies.
    • Experience in forecasting the national economic impact of emerging and disruptive technologies or related fields.
    • Experience in initiating, formulating, and developing a broad range of original and creative economic analyses.
    • Experience in economics, energy and environmental policy analysis or related fields.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Recognized leadership in the field of economics and strategic policy, providing research interpretations and recommendations to stakeholders on economic research studies.
    • Organizational skills, in both the technical and business domains, inclusive of planning and progress monitoring.
    • Exceptional communication skills, with an ability to clearly articulate strategic and technical concepts to broad audiences.
    • Technical society membership and/or leadership in nuclear economics, desired.
    • Industrial and/or commercial experience desirable.
    • Participation on standards committee(s) in nuclear economics, desired.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft software, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Location:
CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires regular work at CNL's Chalk River Laboratory site while also permitting the employee to spend the majority of their time working remotely, should they so desire. CNL employees who choose to work remotely the majority of the time are provided with the equipment required to be successful at their remote workplace (laptop, chair, monitor, etc.); however, they are not provided a dedicated onsite office. CNL's Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
