Sessional Lecturer - Ssm2050 Special Topics in Sustainability Management: Finance for Impact: Inves

The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) at the University of Toronto Mississauga is seeking a Sessional Lecturer to teach a new elective course in Summer 2025 titled SSM2050 Special Topics in Sustainability Management: Finance for Impact: Investment, Innovation, and Sustainable Value. This course is part of the Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM) program and will be open to other graduate students within IMI.

The course explores the application of core corporate finance principles—such as capital budgeting, valuation, and capital structure—to real-world challenges at the intersection of sustainability, innovation, and long-term value creation. It is designed to build technical fluency in financial analysis while equipping students to navigate emerging trends in ESG integration, green finance, climate risk, and impact investing.

Course Topics Include:

• Time value of money, NPV, IRR, and sustainability-adjusted hurdle rates
• Valuation techniques including DCF and ESG-integrated multiples
• Capital structure theory and financing choices in mission-driven firms
• Cash flow estimation, co-benefit valuation, and project analysis under uncertainty
• Green bonds, sustainability-linked instruments, and blended finance
• Integration of carbon pricing, subsidies, and ESG metrics into financial models
• Real options, long-horizon risks, and regulatory uncertainty

Preferred Qualifications

We are seeking an instructor with:

• Substantial professional experience in capital markets, investment analysis, or financial strategy
• A strong understanding of corporate finance fundamentals, including capital budgeting, valuation, and financial decision-making under uncertainty
• Familiarity with sustainability-related financial themes such as climate risk, ESG integration, or long-horizon investing
• Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated interest in applied teaching or mentorship
• A CFA designation and/or graduate-level education in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field

Duties

All normal duties related to the design, administration, and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course material; supervision of teaching assistants assigned to the course, if applicable; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculations and submission of grades to university officials; holding regular office hours, and maintaining reasonable availability for student contact. The mode of instruction for the course is online. Candidates may be required to travel to UTM to carry out some duties.
