The Software Architect position performs three roles as a technical advisor and software developer, project manager and business analyst. The job provides a bridge between the Defined Contribution (DC) business and the technical solutions delivery teams. This position will report into the global Platforms & Innovation department leadership team whose role is to develop the technology solutions for the Buck business in the USA, Canada and Europe.
The work is to act as a technical advisor on the Defined Contribution (DC) technology solutions to meet the demands of the future, to see the project through to deliver and transition from existing systems.
Prior knowledge of Canadian DC systems at Buck is essential to gain a significant head start on the project.
Technical Solutions role
The position will act as the main technical resource for the local and offshore software engineering teams for maintenance and enhancement of the BASIS product. The role involves collaborating with both business and technology consultants globally or taking the lead on some architectural decisions for the DC product portfolio. The majority of the product portfolio is built using Microsoft technologies such as C#.NET and SQL Server taking advantage of either the MVC or DNN Framework. However, some components, servers or platforms will require re-architecting to take advantage of modern practices and technical advances since they were first delivered. Good technical skills, ability to collaborate and a keen appetite to learn and share is needed in this role. Some of the more complex coding work may need to be undertaken from time to time but usually coding tasks will be allocated to the relevant technology teams. There are no direct resource management responsibilities in this role.
Project Management role
The successful candidate will be responsible for meeting business requirements on a portfolio of mostly web applications and services. The portfolio of projects covers a wide range of DC administration outsourcing and employee benefits tools. At times the role performed will be to assist with the project management and coordination of delivery teams and at other times it will be to take the lead on the same. Almost all project teams are distributed globally so there is always a good mix of talent and ideas. Previous experience working in distributed teams will help. Collaboration and communication skills both technically and in layman’s terms are essential to be successful in this role.
Business Analysis role
The position requires strong knowledge of defined contributions in Canada and a good understanding of the technical aspects and inner workings of defined contribution administration systems. This role is the liaison between the defined contributions business at Buck and the software engineers that build the solutions. Direct analysis of client issues may also be required so good communication skills are needed. Excellent requirements analysis skills as well as proven experience of creating technical specification documents will be required in this role.
Activities
Day to day activities involve working with the local teams, as well as with other IT teams, clients, vendors and business departments either in Canada or abroad.
The DC software Architect position is central to the success of this project and all other team members collaborating on this project are in Buck’s Canadian business.
The position involves most of the skills below:
- Overseeing or participating in technology solution decisions and reviewing or creating technical specifications,
- Contributing to product management and innovation initiative discussions and presentations,
- Project management including monitoring, assigning and prioritizing work,
- Business analysis and problem-solving skills including communicating solutions effectively,
- Satisfying documentation and administration requirements within the team,
- Keeping up to date with technology, regulatory issues and Defined Contribution business practices for Canada,
- Other technology-related work as required.
About You
Required: Bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is required. Competent to work at the highest technical level of all phases of applications systems analysis and programming activities.
Language Requirements:
- English proficiency is necessary to effectively perform the duties of this role
Preferred:
- The role of the Software Architect would ideally suit someone already working in a similar role of satisfying business and customer requirements locally and globally, overseeing or contributing to multiple projects, and potentially working with distributed teams.
- Strong analytical skills combined with DC technology solution delivery experience is required.
- Previous experience participating in technology solutions decisions and any experience leading software development teams would be beneficial.
- BSc in computer science or equivalent technology bachelor’s degree,
- Experience working on and making technology decisions for the BASIS product suite,
- 3+ years’ experience as a lead software engineer or software architect on a Microsoft Technology stack,
- 9+ years’ overall experience working with and managing software development with a recent exposure to a SQL Server, Oracle, COBOL, DNN and ASP.NET-based application portfolio,
- Recent solutions examples of justifiable technical decision making will be required,
- A good understanding of the Defined Contribution business in Canada,
- Previous experience leading software development projects,
- Collaboration experience across global project teams with multiple disciplines,
- Good understanding of enterprise application architecture and cloud options,
- Experience in web application security, overseeing security reviews and best practices,
- Experience with data transfer protocols and methodologies,
- Experience working with web and windows services,
- Experience communicating effectively both technically and in layman’s terms,
- Previous participation in design, code and test reviews,
- Experience as a technical/development lead with good problem solving, debugging & troubleshooting skills.
