Senior Systems Engineer (Collaboration and System Administration)

Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Canadian Army's Land Command, Control, Communications & Computers (C4) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (LC4ISR) systems which enable critical decisions on a daily basis. Together with industry partners, Thales is building on the existing networks and applications to enhance digitized operations, support communications between joint and allied forces, and monitor and defend against the threats and evolving capabilities of potential adversaries.

Thales Canada is looking for people interested in directly contributing to the evolution of advanced digitized operations for the Canadian Army into the future, both in Canada and on overseas deployments. The LC4ISR work is broadly divided into four areas, and this opportunity is with the Collaboration and System Administration (CaSA) group at our Ottawa office. We are looking for a senior engineer to support deployment, configuration, and maintenance of core Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) software applications as part of an agile team. This work includes operating systems, software library frameworks, file sharing, file viewing, and web based applications.

Key Areas of Responsibility

A senior systems engineer must have a demonstrated record of leadership and excellence in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments, including:

  • Tailor the system engineering process, practices and tools; Estimate and appropriately decompose work in an agile lifecycle process; Provide timely and accurate status updates;
  • Develop the preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements; Review and validate internal and subcontractor designs, plans, and schedules; Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and document and design reviews;
  • Author technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces, and installation elements; Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the designs are consistent with needs, desires, and concerns of the end-users;
  • Support the development of verification and validation artifacts including plans and procedures;
  • Collaborate with other functions during the implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;
  • Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements; Support the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site;
  • Technical subcontract management including management of work scope and compliance of the (subcontractor) supplied solution;

The specific duties associated with the project role include:

  • Installing and configuring servers and software; Troubleshooting server and software issues and providing resolutions; Documenting configuration of the system; Answering technical questions regarding servers and software; Understanding of user accounts and password management; Understanding of system infrastructure concepts (servers, databases, services, OS, security); Management of virtual environments; and Understanding of basic networking (subnetting, ssh).

Minimum Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains;
  • Windows Administration (Windows 10/11, Windows Server, Windows Permissions/Grouping, GPOs, Antivirus, SharePoint); VMware Virtual Environments; Visual C++
  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Active Directory (highly desirable); DotNet Framework; Dell Networker; Java; NXPowerLite; MS ShareGate Desktop; MS SharePoint; MS System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) - Endpoint Configuration Manager (ECM); MS System Center Orchestrator Manager (SCOM); LCSS Coordinator (DND-specific); Variable Message Format (VMF) to Canadian Database (CDB) Converter (VMF2CDB) (DND-specific)

Physical Demands

  • Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site (including onboard vehicle or vessel).

Special Position Requirements

  • Hybrid position. Full time, standard business hours.
  • Possibility of occasional travel to customer site for technical support / integration activities.
  • Possibility of occasional travel within Canada for planning events.
