Join the Compliance Branch

The Compliance Branch is responsible for delivering audit, review, and enforcement functions to ensure compliance with Ontario's tax statutes. Our work promotes public confidence in the fairness and integrity of Ontario's tax system while supporting tax policy and administration across government.

We are seeking a Senior Group Manager to oversee a team of auditors in the mining tax section.

Please note: The home location for this position is the North York office, with an expectation of on-site attendance three days per week in line with the Ontario Public Service's current hybrid work model. Alternate work locations at the Oshawa (33 King St W) or Hamilton (119 King St W) offices may be considered, with occasional travel to the North York office as required. Please note that the hybrid work model is subject to change.

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Leading and overseeing the mining tax audit program, ensuring compliance with legislative and policy frameworks.
  • Managing a team of auditors, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback.
  • Overseeing audit planning and execution, assigning audits, and reviewing working papers for accuracy and completeness.
  • Providing advisory support on tax compliance matters in collaboration with internal divisions and the Ministry of Mines.
  • Partnering with external stakeholders, including other ministries and provinces, to share knowledge and best practices.
  • Communicating complex tax issues effectively with corporate executives, government officials, and industry representatives.
  • Ensuring audits are conducted efficiently, fairly, and in alignment with professional accounting and auditing standards.

Strategic Leadership and Management Skills

  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills with the political acuity to navigate complex tax and compliance issues.

Technical Expertise

  • In-depth knowledge of mining tax legislation, compliance programs, and audit methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Ontario tax legislation and broader federal/provincial tax statutes to lead a team of professional auditors in the application of the legislation in an audit context.
  • An ability to interpret and apply legislation to provide knowledgeable and comprehensive interpretation.
  • Experience applying knowledge of audit and accounting principles to support the documentation of audits.
  • Background in corporate tax compliance, whether in public practice, tax administration, or industry dealing with complex taxpayers.
  • Experience with financial reporting systems and data analysis tools.
  • Understanding of project management principles to guide mandates and strategic initiatives.
  • A CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation or equivalent accounting/audit expertise is an asset.

Communication and Relationship Management Skills

  • Ability to translate complex tax matters into clear, actionable insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with government agencies, corporate stakeholders, and industry partners.
  • Strong political acuity and interpersonal skills to navigate and resolve tax and audit challenges effectively.
