ABOUT THE ROLE

  • The Controller will be responsible for guiding and supporting the finance department, while ensuring the company’s financial performance meets and exceeds expectations. This role will be the senior finance lead for units in a multiple business organization. Reporting to the General Manager, the Controller will be an integral part of both the Business Units and the Finance team.

WHAT YOU’LL BE CONTRIBUTING

  • Act as a trusted financial business partner and adviser, influencing the day-to-day decisions, shaping strategy and the direction of the applicable Business Units, including identifying and presenting financial and operational KPI and other business metrics to drive effective decision-making;
  • Provide 'real time' support, analysis and value that will assist in decision making for each of the Business Units, including supporting their respective sales and operational leaders;
  • Be the interface or ‘translator’ between finance and operational functions;
  • Interpret data, order and assess its value, and then present the findings to the relevant stakeholders in a clear and concise manner;
  • Responsible for the accounting and financial reporting of each Business Unit, including year-end;
  • Responsible for all financial matters associated with new and ongoing projects in the business unit, including project-based accounting;
  • Develop, coordinate and prepare annual budgets for each Business Unit;
  • Coordinate, maintain and prepare short and long-term forecasts for each Business Unit and monitor progress against the Strategic Plan;
  • Design and lead process improvement initiatives and implement solutions for the Business Units;
  • Ensure corporate wide policies and procedures are implemented and followed within the Business Unit;
  • Support the Group finance manager and team with all activities associated with information systems, financial reporting, budgeting/forecasting, cash management and analysis;
  • Support the CEO/GM and Business Unit Managers in ad-hoc projects as well as investment analysis and decision-making associated with the Business Units;
  • Support the monthly Board meeting agenda with financial reports, progress updates relative to plan, and any special projects;
  • Support the year-end formal audit process with assigned audit team (i.e. BDO), providing all required information and documentation;
  • Support the AGM meeting agenda with financial reports, and any relevant financial content and/or progress relatable to the Membership;
  • Ability and willingness to travel between our four branch locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Oakwood, and Sunderland;
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally within Canada and US;

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • A Professional certification (e.g. CPA) and practical experience in operational accounting;
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years’ experience in a financial business partner role overseeing a division;
  • Relevant industry experience – agriculture/manufacturing/distribution/project-related industries;
  • Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of both operations and management;
  • Good mix of commercial acumen, analytical skills, an ability to build relationships, to communicate effectively and to persuade;
  • Experience in managing a team and strong leadership skills;
  • Well-organized with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines;
  • Process oriented and able to put in place and enforce robust internal controls;
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability;
  • Understanding of data analysis and forecasting;
  • Creative and able to develop FP&A tools, templates and/or models;
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel;
  • Experience with operating systems (SAP or similar).
