Scope of Position

The role of the Project Manager is to initiate, plan, execute, deliver, monitor/Control, and close projects according to determined deadlines to accepted quality levels and within budget. The projects may range from small to large complex projects with significant company visibility. There is the requirement to identify or acquire resources and coordinate the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan.

As well this role acts in a leadership capacity to mentor and train junior PM's and BA's as required. The Project Manager shall mange the project lifecycle following the Project Management Institute's best practices, PMBOK Guidelines, and the Alterna PMO Office standards under the direction of the Director, Business Management Office.

Major Responsibilities

Initiating & Planning

  • Develop Project Charter following Alterna PMO standards. Support project-chartering process and setup, including developing, project scope, goals and deliverable's that support business goals in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders
  • Identify and work with Business Analysts and Stakeholders
  • Collect requirements, define scope, and create work breakdown structure
  • Develop project plan and sequence activities
  • Estimate costs and develop budgets which could range from small to large
  • Plan Quality Control
  • Develop Project Plan/Requirements
  • Plan Communications
  • Develop Risk Management Plan
  • Establish Roles (RACI)
  • Establish Project Governance

Executing

  • Facilitate Steering Committee
  • Direct and Manage Project Execution
  • Acquire, Develop and Manage the Project Team
  • Distribute information and manage Stakeholder expectations
  • Ensure quality of deliverable's
  • Facilitate and participate in business analysis activities when required (based on the project requirements)

Monitoring and Controlling

  • Track projects with related cost estimation and scope control responsibilities
  • Continually identify, prioritize and mitigate project risks
  • Manage the team, driving motivation, collaboration and performance
  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team
  • Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path
  • Track short-term project metrics (for example, schedule variances and customer satisfaction)
  • Provide oversight and control of any external resources contracted to the project
  • Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion
  • Set and continually manage project expectations and project success criteria with team members and other stakeholders
  • Plan, schedule and track project timelines, milestones and deliverable's using appropriate tools
  • Prepare and submit project status reports based on pre-determined status reporting requirements
  • Continually review and manage the project status with the project team, including the analysis of results and troubleshoot problem areas
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on project status when required
  • Manage the triple constraint of cost, time and scope with recommendations and strategies
  • Liaise with project stakeholders when required
  • Quality of deliverable's

Closing Projects

  • Participate in the end of project review process, identifying lessons learned and providing recommendations for improvements for future project planning
  • Identify and make recommendations for continual improvement
  • Close budgets and account tracking mechanisms
  • Perform project reviews

Supporting the Business Management Office

  • Support the development of formal methodologies
  • Assist and support the Director with reporting to senior management
  • Assist and support the development of key performance metrics
  • Facilitate Steering Committee as required
  • Perform project reviews
  • Leadership/mentor-ship and training for others in the group
  • Tasks with turning troubled project around
  • Continuous improvement analysis and change initiation is a priority

Qualifications

Education / Certification / Experience

  • University degree or college diploma in a related field Business or Information Technology/Computer Science field
  • Certifications in Project Management (for example, PMP) considered a strong asset
  • 5 years demonstrated work experience in Project Management at this senior level covering all aspects of the project management life-cycle
  • Knowledge of Computer science - programming, applications, developer a strong asset
  • Advanced level experience working with project management software and related tools
  • Leadership/mentor-ship experience
  • Experience developing and monitoring project/capital budgets
  • Experience at facilitating different size groups, in varied disciplines at different levels including facilitating Steering Committees
