Responsibilities

Reporting to the Co-Directors of the EDHRO, the Equity and Community Engagement Coordinator has the primary tasks of being the point of contact and support for equity-deserving students who have experienced oppression-based harm; create awareness, education and training initiatives to raise awareness, visibility and engagement with human rights and EDI within the University; and coordinate the Student Equity Centre.

Support

  • Point of contact and support for students who have experienced oppression-based harm and are in need of supports, coaching, resources and/or accountability processes;
  • Utilize intersectional, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approaches to support systems navigation and case resolution processes;
  • Remain current with pertinent ethical requirements and research relevant to post-secondary experience from an equity lens;
  • Provide referral information and connect with other supports and services;
  • Collaborate with other internal portfolios and external community partners to coordinate support; and
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Awareness, Education and Training

  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of special events, awareness campaigns and customized workshops for the benefits of the diverse community of faculty, staff and students at Laurentian University and to raise awareness, visibility and engagement with EDI and human rights within the University;
  • Develop educational programs and materials with a focus on diversity, equity, accessibility, social justice, and human rights, which address the social and cultural aspects of student, staff and faculty life at Laurentian University with particular emphasis on understanding and acceptance of diversity through communication, awareness, training, and events;
  • Design and disseminate resources on EDI-related topics to facilitate sharing of best practices;
  • Create social media content aimed at engaging Laurentian community members in topics related to EDI and human rights;
  • Assist in identifying gaps in existing University policies and processes related to reporting and responding to experiences of oppression and harm;
  • Collaborate with equity portfolios in the University to coordinate efforts to achieve goals of the portfolio;
  • Assist the University in understanding the representation, experiences and perspectives of students needed to inform the design of equitable and inclusive services, build supports and enhance outcomes;
  • Support the EDHRO in the promotion and implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), including the University's Multi-Year Accessibility Plan; and
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Coordination of the Student Equity Centre

  • Enhance the wellbeing and community-building of equity deserving student communities at Laurentian University by providing coordination and support to the development and operation of the Student Equity Centre, a dedicated space for student clubs and communities committed to advancing social justice, anti-racism, equity, diversity or inclusion on campus;
  • Assist with supporting and organizing programs and events and liaising with a wide range of internal and external partners across students, staff and faculty;
  • Using an inclusive approach, engage with individual students and student groups to build awareness of development initiatives, programming and events tailored for equity deserving students; and
  • Act as a conduit to resources and structures within the University to support and empower student clubs and communities within the Student Equity Centre to achieve their goals related to inclusion on campus.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field. A Masters or Professional Degree is considered an asset;
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in program planning and development, including training and awareness programs;
  • A candidate who identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) with 3-5 years of experience supporting and advocating for people from marginalized backgrounds, or commensurate experience;
  • Strong communication, decision making skills and sound judgement;
  • Experience facilitating and organizing committees and/or communities of practice;
  • Excellent organization and coordinating skills;
  • Demonstrated high level of initiative;
  • Excellent self-care practices;
  • Human rights and related legislation knowledge;
  • Appreciation of the University environment, its diversity and an ability to relate well to staff, students and faculty;
  • Experience in the design and delivery of educational programs;
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation and public speaking skills;
  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of training plan and make recommendations for change;
  • Experience handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality and balance;
  • Possession of good interpersonal skills, tact and discretion;
  • Knowledge of trauma informed practices;
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of Indigenous and disability-related issues and their intersection(s) with other identities including race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, etc.;
  • Ability to maintain confidential information;
  • Proficiency in MS Office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software applications, as well as Internet research capabilities.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment;
  • Knowledge of and compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA); and
  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
