What is the opportunity?

The Strategy & Operations Legal Team is staffing an Assistant General Counsel, Real Estate & Procurement position, to support RBC on a wide range of corporate real estate and procurement legal matters across the enterprise. In this role, you will lead a group of real estate and procurement professionals to provide and oversee: (i) highly specialized and strategic legal services to RBC enterprise business and functional partners on a broad range of real estate matters in respect of Global Corporate Real Estate, Physical Network Strategy & Delivery, Construction and Environment & Sustainability; and (ii) solution-oriented legal advice and counsel to RBC Procurement, and RBC business and functional groups, for procurement and complex technology transactions including outsourcing, cloud computing, SaaS, software development and systems implementation. Embedded within RBC Law Group's Strategy & Operations team, you will have ample opportunity to work on novel and emerging legal issues in the real estate and procurement areas.

What will you do?

  • Identify, assess and manage legal, regulatory, reputational and operational risk relating to real estate and procurement enterprise activities and new initiatives (including cross-border and global activities) and devise strategies and action plans to manage these risks
  • Deliver specialized and creative legal advice while demonstrating expert knowledge in real estate and procurement law and a high level of commitment to providing exceptional service in a timely, pragmatic and innovative manner
  • Provide sound legal risk analysis in a user friendly manner to senior executives and assess and anticipate the needs of business and functional partners
  • Drive strategic thinking about enterprise business drivers, significant trends, key issues and implications for senior business and functional partners
  • Act as an escalation point and strategic decision-maker for legal issues for real estate and procurement matters
  • Manage a team of legal professionals providing strong leadership and direction to achieve a culture of high performance and superior individual and team results
  • Leverage real estate and procurement legal expertise knowledge and develop continuity of knowledge to deliver coordinated and comprehensive solutions
  • Manage the activities of external counsel and legal process outsourcers to identify the optimal resources for resolving issues and managing the quality and cost of external services

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • JD/LLB from a recognized law school
  • Common law background and bar membership
  • 15+ years of relevant experience as a real estate, procurement or technology lawyer in private practice or as in-house counsel

Nice-to-have

  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment and balancing competing work demands, multi-tasking, prioritizing and being responsive to business imperatives
  • Ability to develop a quick understanding of the requirements and role of key internal stakeholders and senior executives and build effective relationships with them
  • Significant managerial experience
  • In-house experience at a financial institution
