What is the opportunity?

RBC's Emerging Risk team identifies, assesses, and monitors the enterprise's Emerging Risks, generating analysis and insights into these risks and their implications for the bank. The team communicates these insights to senior-level audiences and decision-makers across the enterprise, including executives and the Board of Directors. Accordingly, the team acts as Group Risk Management (GRM) thought leaders on specific Emerging Risk issues. (Past examples include U.S.-China tensions, the Russia-Ukraine and Middle East conflicts, trade wars, inflation, COVID-19, and artificial intelligence).

In addition, the team oversees the enterprise's broader risk identification process for Enterprise-Wide Stress Testing (EWST), as well as the design of scenarios for EWST, other stress tests, and ad hoc tabletop exercises.

The Associate Director, Emerging Risk will play a key role in executing the Emerging Risk team's mandate and further developing RBC's Emerging Risk and stress testing programs.

This is a Hybrid role with 3 in-office days per week based out of the downtown Toronto office.

What will you do?

  • Lead the identification, assessment, and monitoring of individual or select categories of Emerging Risks
  • Monitor global geopolitical, economic, technological, societal, environmental, and regulatory trends
  • Perform in-depth research and analysis, assessing the implications of Emerging Risks and their potential financial and non-financial impacts to RBC
  • Update the enterprise's Risk Inventory, as required
  • Design scenarios for ad hoc tabletop exercises and the bank's regulatory and internal stress tests
  • Develop concise and impactful analyses and presentations for senior-level audiences, including executives and the Board of Directors
  • Consult and work with people across the enterprise, including from other risk areas, RBC's business segments, Economics, and Enterprise Strategy
  • Prepare quarterly, annual, and ad hoc reporting of Top and Emerging Risks for senior management and the Board
  • Identify opportunities to improve RBC's Emerging Risk management and stress testing processes

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • 5+ years of experience in the financial services industry, risk management, and/or consulting
  • University degree in a relevant field
  • Experience developing concise and impactful executive-level reports, presentations, and other deliverables
  • Advanced proficiency with PowerPoint
  • Proficiency with other Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Excel, Word)
  • Excellent research, analytical, conceptual thinking, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand, simplify, and explain complex concepts
  • Intellectual curiosity and a general understanding and awareness of current global events, economic concepts, emerging technologies, and other trends

Nice-to-have

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field
  • CFA, FRM, CPA, or any finance- or risk-related professional designation/certification
  • Sound knowledge of the financial services industry, risk management, and economics
  • Proficiency with Bloomberg and other market and/or economic data sources
