What is the opportunity?
RBC is seeking a proactive and highly skilled Associate Director, Local Market Risk to join our dynamic team. This role will be critical in assessing trading and market-making strategies, monitoring risk across portfolios, and ensuring that our risk management framework aligns with RBC's overall risk appetite and business objectives. You will collaborate closely with business units, senior management, and other key stakeholders to provide actionable insights, drive risk-conscious decision-making, and support strategic goals. You will help promote a "Best of Class" risk oversight environment. You will provide effective 'second line of defense' challenge to Front Office risk taking activities, which will require a deep and meaningful understanding of client/trading strategies, products deployed and pertinent risks emerging from cash and derivative market developments to assess the implications for the risk profile of the trading books.
What will you do?
Risk Assessment: Assess trading and market-making strategies, products, and significant transactions to ensure they align with RBC's risk tolerance and business objectives. Evaluate and propose necessary changes to risk measures to ensure alignment between Profit & Loss (P&L) performance and risk metrics.
Monitoring & Reporting: Continuously monitor trading activities and exposures, ensuring they stay within defined Risk Appetite and approved Policies, Limits, and Product Mandates.
Constructive Challenge: Provide constructive challenge to risk limit and product approval requests, fostering a culture of thoughtful risk-taking and decision-making.
Insightful Analysis: Stay informed on market developments and emerging risks, delivering in-depth analysis and recommendations to senior management and business partners.
Collaboration: Work closely with business, technology, and other functional partners on key systems and process initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance and driving efficiency in decision-making processes.
Model Risk Management: Apply your expertise in model assumptions and limitations to ensure proper risk management practices and model capabilities are fit for purpose.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
MBA, MA, MS in Finance, Economics or a Quantitative subject is preferred.
3-5 years of experience working in a Market Risk / Credit Risk or Valuations based role including knowledge of market risk concepts (sensitivity analysis, VaR, stress testing etc.).
Minimum 2 years of experience covering commodity markets, preferably energy (i.e. Natural Gas, Electricity, Oil).
Experience working with derivative products (i.e. Futures, Options, Swaps), with a strong preference for structured products and non-linear payoffs in energy markets.
Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to condense complex details into narratives suitable for communication with senior risk and business management.
Proficiency in financial modeling, coding (preferably Python) and data analytics tools.
Must be a strong collaborator with a high level of curiosity and problem-solving skills.
Nice-to-have
Familiar with regulatory/compliance requirements (FRTB, Volcker, etc.).
Proven experience working with Tableau.
