Leads the team providing and managing the delivery of legal advice and support for and on behalf of BMO Wealth Management's Asset Management, Canadian Private Wealth, InvestorLine and Insurance businesses.

Provides and/or manages key specialized or broad-based legal advice and services, with significant organizational or major line of business implications, for matters in which the BMO Financial Group may be engaged in order to achieve organizational goals and/or minimize legal risk. Draws upon in-depth knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the law and governing legislation. Provides leadership and development of a team of legal professionals responsible for providing legal services to the line of business/client group. The role draws upon in-depth knowledge of the Bank, the financial services industry, and the regulatory environment for the BMO Financial Group. The role does include leading the team that provides litigation advice and support.
Provides legal advice and counsel to senior management/executive.
Manages legal services and leads a group of legal professionals for a major line of business/geographic location.
Assigns and monitors work, provides performance feedback, coaching and mentoring, as applicable, to maintain a high-performance culture and meet goals and objectives.
Applies key specialized and/or broad-based legal knowledge, including knowledge of governing legislation, with Bank-wide or otherwise significant scope.
Manages relationships at senior executive levels of the organization and/or law department leadership and/or acts as a peer review and internal resource to other legal professionals, including senior practitioners, within the law department.
Oversees, exercises judgement on and resolves significant, complex legal issues with significant organizational implications for a major line of business or geographic location.
Directs significant legal matters in which the organization is involved, directly or through external counsel, including oversight of external counsel.
Intervenes in more broadly impacting or sensitive legal issues.
Recommends and/or approves policy, procedures and performance standards regarding law department or its mandate.
Manages legal or regulatory risk with significant potential exposure - multi-billion dollar range or Bank-wide implications.
Manages internal and external relationships (i.e. senior executive levels, external counsel, significant regulatory bodies).
Manages file-specific legal expenses on complex legal issues.
Qualifications:
Minimum requirements are a degree in law (LLB) and license to practice law in the required jurisdiction.
15+ years of Legal Practice experience.
Advanced, highly specialized or broad based level of knowledge in legal field including knowledge of governing legislation.
Strong knowledge of business context related to a specific line(s) of business.
Experienced people manager/demonstrated leadership capabilities, including mentoring skills.
Is viewed as a key legal resource for the Law Department.
Strong research skill/able to proactively provide ideas, advice and solutions relative to legal issues
Ability to synthesize large, complex volumes of information
High level of judgement
Strong analytical capability
Strong verbal and written communication skills

Strong relationship management skills/able to relate at all levels

Please note the target base salary range for this specific position is noted as a range from $210,000.00 CDN to $240,000.00 CDN.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.
BMO Financial Group's total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
