What is the opportunity?

Corporate Client Group - Loan Syndications plays a key role in the realization of Corporate Client Group (CCG) objectives through the marketing, structuring, delivery and management of multi-bank debt solutions for a targeted customer base. The CCG team targets loan origination in the Canadian mid-market, including large Canadian subsidiaries of foreign multinationals, financial sponsor-owned businesses, private and small to medium cap public Canadian companies.

Primary role of the Associate is to support the Loan Syndications team in providing structuring, marketing, and loan distribution advice to address financing requirements of borrowers in CCG and Mid-Market Leverage and Infrastructure Finance (MMLIF) across Canada. Syndicated finance professionals act as arranger and underwriter, providing market intelligence as well as marketing, execution and loan distribution expertise for corporations and financial sponsors.

Initiative, effective communication and responsibility are key attributes, along with credit analysis, research, and marketing material preparation to enhance deal execution. Flexibility and enthusiasm are needed to help support and run with various initiatives and projects in CCG markets across Canada.

What will you do?

  • Support in evaluation and structuring of bank financing arrangements to meet MMLIF and CCG client objectives. Liaise with deal teams across the country, Agency Services, Group Risk Management and RBCCM Syndications to ensure loan commitments are distributed in line with targets.

  • Coordinate with all CCG groups including MMLIF, Mezzanine Finance and CCG to evaluate and originate new business.

  • Assist with negotiation of credit and other legal agreements with outside counsel and clients.

  • Acts as key liaison between CCG and all other financial institutions who are loan participants in RBC-led transactions. This would include the initial transaction and subsequent amendments.

  • Manage and respond to requirements of other lenders to help assist them in participating in CCG transactions.

  • Key responsibilities to also include: preparation of Confidential Information Memorandums, lender presentations, internal vetting decks, maintenance of comparable transaction datasets/market update materials, preparing syndication strategies/timelines, preparation and negotiation of term sheets/arrangement/fee letters and preparing Loan Distribution Committee memorandums.

What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Economics, Accounting, or Finance

  • Knowledge of Capital Markets, credit, credit metrics, and credit structuring

  • Professional oral and written communication skills are an absolute must

  • Strong Excel, PowerPoint skills and the ability to source data/perform research

  • Ability to perform well under pressure, meet time sensitive client and lender deadlines, prioritize work and multi-task responsibilities while working on multiple projects

  • Well organized and able to set priorities and devote appropriate attention to each assignment

  • Must maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct

  • High level of attention to detail in both written and financial work

Nice to have:

  • Preference given to individuals with an MBA, CPA or CFA

  • Work experience in investment banking / corporate banking / corporate finance / corporate lending / financial advisory

  • Ability to take initiative and function independently

  • Previous syndication experience beneficial
