What is the opportunity?

As Director and Senior Tax Counsel for the Tax Advisory Group you will work closely with a group of tax professionals within the RBC Taxation group providing Canadian income tax policy direction, tax training and technical tax support to RBC Financial Group business units and support functions (business partners) on tax issues impacting clients, products and services. This group also provides support for global tax issues, such as foreign withholding tax reclaims, tax treaties, and any other tax issues impacting RBC's businesses. Sharing of knowledge and information, and team participation are crucial to the success of this position and of the group.

What will you do?

  • Respond to all tax-related queries from business partners regarding clients, products and services on a timely basis to enable functions to provide quality client service.
  • Research complex and specialized tax issues.
  • Participate in the supervision and development of other TAG members.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating tax risks associated with products and services, assessing the effectiveness of controls in place to manage those risks, identifying opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of controls, and working with business units to develop and implement controls and procedures for monitoring compliance. As part of this, participate in and support the development of new products and services, and the modification of existing ones.
  • Where appropriate, attend client meetings to provide tax support to client relationship and sales staff as well as manage tax issues for client accounts where problems arise and require representation to the Canada Revenue Agency or other taxing authorities. This includes reviewing tax opinions provided by external advisors on complex product issues and client transactions as well as supervising outside tax counsel retained by business units to provide legal advice, tax opinions or advance tax rulings.
  • Participate in representations to, and negotiations with, government officials.
  • Increase tax knowledge in business units and support functions by:
    • Identifying issues and topics requiring training and development
    • Participating in the organization, development and/or delivery of internal training programs.
    • Contributing to tax sections of policy and procedure manuals.
    • Developing and maintaining tax reference material.
  • Monitor all new Canadian tax legislation (and other foreign tax legislation as required) and:
    • Evaluate the impact of tax developments and new legislation.
    • Identify potential product/service opportunities arising from legislative changes.
  • Advise all functions of tax changes that may affect their products, services and administration.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Professional designation (CPA or LLB/JD)
  • Completion of CICA In-Depth Tax Course
  • Minimum of 7+ years professional or industry experience in personal, trust and corporate taxation, including personal financial planning
  • Knowledge of and experience with specialized tax issues relevant to RBC Financial Group products and services, including estates and personal trusts, registered plans, pooled and mutual funds, investment funds, securities brokerage and global custodial services
  • Broad knowledge of financial institutions, personal and corporate trust business and operations
  • Excellent tax research and writing skills
  • Ability to communicate complex tax matters in an easily understood manner to non-tax professionals
  • Excellent written, verbal and electronic communication skills to effectively communicate complex tax issues to all levels of senior management and supporting personnel within their respective business units
  • An innovative and business approach to tax issues with an ability to apply technical rules in a practical manner to business operations and functions
