What is the opportunity?

The Director, Special Loans and Advisory Services (SLAS) provides day to day management of RBC's global high risk portfolio of Capital Markets accounts, with a focus on minimizing RBC losses while maximizing desired client retention. This individual manages complex and/or higher risk accounts, typically syndicated transactions (as Agent or participant) through effective relationship and risk management practices.

The Director develops and implements strategies with a goal of maximizing recoveries while minimizing financial, legal and reputational risk for RBC. The Director develops relationships with banking colleagues inside and outside the bank as well as with legal and financial professionals, to optimize resolution success.

What will you do?

  • Develop strategies to proactively mitigate RBC's reputational, credit and litigation losses.
  • Exercise due diligence in negotiating, preparing terms and vetting agreements that preserve or enhance the bank's financial position in both the short and long term.
  • Ensure clients are treated with respect, a highly professional empathetic approach is used, and good working relationships are maintained.
  • Ensure that the portfolio is being managed in a proactive manner such that the time to resolution is minimized.
  • Work with Corporate Banking teams and GRM partners on an advisory service basis.
  • Emphasize the need to create surviving entities and to the extent possible, retain relationships for RBC.
  • Participate in bank and/or industry focused events.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • 2+ years of insolvency/restructuring or relevant banking experience
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to impact and influence others, including listening, understanding and responding, information seeking and consulting orientation.
  • Ability to successfully utilize internal networks to assist with problem resolution.
  • Capacity to get along with different types and levels of stakeholders ranging from peers to Sponsors and Senior Management/Executives.
  • Teamwork and cooperation - building partnerships with syndicate members, insolvency professionals and internal service partners is key to success.
  • Thinking: strong analytical and risk assessment skills; breakthrough thinking; conceptual thinking; strategic business sense.
  • Have dealt with clients in an interactive face to face manner.

Nice-to-have

  • 5+ years of insolvency/restructuring or relevant banking experience, with a proven track record in negotiating, risk management and client relationship management.
  • Capital Markets experience is preferred.
  • Project Management skills are an asset.
  • MBA, CFA, CPA or LIT is an asset.
