The Litigation Paralegal works in collaboration with the litigation group supporting Canadian Personal and Commercial Banking. The role requires the Paralegal to work in a complex and fast changing environment where legal, regulatory, and reputational risks must be constantly considered.
The Paralegal communicates and maintains relationships not only with the legal team and other colleagues within the bank’s Legal, Regulatory Compliance & Procurement Group, but also with internal clients and external counsel.
Manage a portfolio of litigation matters, escalations, and complaints.
Represent BMO before the Small Claims Court, at examinations under oath, mediations and at case and settlement conferences.
Conduct case research and trial preparation using various research tools.
Prepare, draft, and revise legal pleadings, documents, and reports.
Respond to court orders and subpoenas in collaboration with internal and external litigation counsel, including document gathering, review, and witness preparation.
Respond to internal/external inquiries and provides legal guidance.
Assist with regular reporting, including case status, and preparation of presentation material.
Handle sensitive/confidential Bank information while minimizing legal risk.
Identify emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making.
Support the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Build effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders.
Review and update operations manuals, procedures, and policies.
Mentor and provide guidance to law clerks.
Execute work independently to deliver timely, accurate and efficient service and support.
Qualifications:
Typically, 7 years or more of relevant experience and a post-secondary diploma or degree and an equivalent combination of education and experience (Canadian or foreign paralegal or law diploma or degree).
P1 License from the Law Society of Ontario (or equivalent), in good standing.
In Canada, legal representative experience before the Small Claims Court and/or before an administrative tribunal(s).

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
