Responsible for directing and managing the accounting departments for Toronto and Ottawa offices and project-related activities. Ensure integrity and accuracy of financial reporting systems in accordance with GAAP / ASPE and the Law Society of Ontario. Provide analytical support regarding general ledger and financial statements. Develop accounting procedures as required. Exercise sound judgement related to confidentiality, disclosure and application of Firm policies and procedures.

Direct Report(s): Senior Financial Accounting Analyst, Financial Analyst, Junior Accountant, Accounting Assistant, Senior Accounts Payable Administrator, Accounts Payable Coordinator, Trust Administrator,

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Direct and manage the day-to-day accounting functions and ensures all accounting records are complete and timely
  2. Prepare and review financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, and related analysis
  3. Actively monitor financial systems and processes to identify and support improvements in management reporting, operational support, and client service
  4. Oversee benchmarking through our peer monitor program, analysis, and reporting
  5. Manage the Trust function and ensure compliance with Law Society of Ontario
  6. Support and analyze special projects including identifying risks, sharing lessons learned, and reporting conclusions and recommendations to the Senior Director of Finance
  7. Support day to day banking relationships and corporate credit card administration
  8. Manage, develop, and maintain internal controls and ensure completeness and compliance
  9. Interpret Finance policies and guidelines to ensure knowledge and compliance, work to close gaps where appropriate in these areas.
  10. Prepare quarterly and year-to-date expense forecasts
  11. Assist senior financial management, Managing Partner, Executive Director and Chair, as required
  12. Co-ordinate the external audit for the Toronto and Ottawa office

Job Specifications:

Knowledge and Experience:

  • A university degree in business/commerce/economics or MBA with an accounting major
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in managing an accounting function and financial analysis CGA/CMA/CA is required

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management
  • Excellent leadership skills to develop and manage a team of direct and indirect reports
  • Experience and aptitude with automating processes and system implementations
  • Experience working with external auditors and managing year end audits
  • Ability to work under pressure and adjust to changing priorities
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills/capabilities
  • Good working knowledge of commodity taxes
  • Project management skills in order to lead teams on projects
  • Ability to organize large volumes of data for analysis
  • Advance knowledge of Excel and working knowledge of Aderant, SQL is preferred
  • Team player with a positive can-do attitude
