Job Description:

Location: Hybrid

The Manager, Group Underwriting is accountable for leading a team of group underwriters and underwriting administration specialists located in Waterloo and Toronto, responsible for the quote and underwriting administration of corporate accounts business that is in line with the company's targets (earnings and growth) and underwriting policies. S/he sees to the development and performance of the team members and distributes workload equitably among the team. S/he counsels the team on underwriting and risk analysis principles and techniques and guides the team members on the acceptable level of risk in compliance with Sun Life's standards.

As a member of the Group Underwriting management team, s/he contributes to support team members engagement and to the continuous improvement of the underwriting department operations. The Manager, Group Underwriting will also have to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners, including Account Executives, Business Development Directors and Group Benefit market players.

What will you do?


Financial/Risk Management

  • Ensure that the appropriate risk assumptions, pricing practices and procedures are applied
  • Ensure underwriting policies, practices and guidelines are rolled-out, understood and adhered to
  • Aware of financial gaps and contributes to action plans to address these gaps
  • Support preparation and participate in quarterly Market Segment Meetings with upper management

Leadership

  • Build and maintain a desirable work environment where team members are informed, engaged, and know what is expected of them
  • Coach, manage and enable the development of team members

Operations Management

  • Ensure service standards, productivity and quality targets are met
  • Support and participate in identification of opportunities to continually enhance the operations, namely through Continuous Improvement process of Brighter Way Management System

Professional/Technical Expertise

  • Provide advice and expertise on financial, underwriting and business issues to team members, Business Development partners, Management, Advisors and Clients
  • Participate/contribute as part of the Corporate Accounts Underwriting Management Team, including:
    • Promoting knowledge, expertise and work sharing
    • Projects and initiatives as required

What do you need to succeed?

  • Minimum of 5-10 years of group underwriting experience or equivalent
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills including flexibility/creativity in order to respect client's unique needs while considering impact on risk
  • Strong ability to coach, motivate and lead
  • Capacity to manage change initiatives
  • Results oriented and customer focused

Assets

  • GBA and/or CEBS designation
  • Mathematical or Actuarial background
  • Previous people management experience

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
