We are looking for a Merchant Risk Analyst-Acquiring Business with experience in merchant acquiring or payment processing. The Merchant Risk Analyst-Acquiring Business will be responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with e-commerce merchants within an acquiring institution. Your role involves monitoring merchant transactions, analyzing fraud and chargeback trends, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and industry standards. You will work closely with risk, compliance, and fraud teams to safeguard the institution against financial and reputational risks.

This is a permanent full time position working onsite at out Toronto Office along Leslie Street. Qualified candidates based in Montreal can be considered and will report to our Montreal Office.

1. Merchant Risk Assessment & Monitoring:

  • Conduct detailed risk evaluations of merchant applications, assessing financial stability, business models, and transaction patterns.
  • Perform ongoing monitoring of merchant accounts to detect abnormal activity, fraud, and compliance violations.
  • Review high-risk merchant categories such as digital goods, subscription services, gaming, forex, and crypto.
  • Analyze chargeback ratios, refund patterns, and fraud rates to proactively identify risk trends.

2. Fraud Detection & Prevention:

  • Monitor real-time transactions using fraud detection tools and alert systems to identify potential fraudulent activity.
  • Investigate suspicious transactions and implement necessary risk controls such as transaction limits, reserves, or account terminations.
  • Work with fraud prevention teams to refine risk rules, machine learning models, and transaction scoring algorithms.

3. Compliance & Regulatory Adherence:

  • Ensure compliance with PCI DSS, AML, KYC, and other industry regulations related to payment processing.
  • Conduct periodic merchant risk reviews to ensure adherence to Visa, Mastercard, and other card network policies.
  • Assist in regulatory reporting and audits related to fraud, chargebacks, and financial risk.

4. Chargeback & Dispute Management:

  • Analyze chargeback disputes to identify root causes and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Work with merchants to educate them on fraud prevention best practices and chargeback reduction.
  • Coordinate with dispute resolution teams to ensure timely responses to chargebacks and fraudulent claims.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with underwriting, compliance, legal, and fraud teams to align risk strategies.
  • Provide risk insights to business development teams to balance growth with risk mitigation.
  • Assist in the development of risk models, policies, and procedures to enhance the institution's risk framework.

What you bring to the table:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in merchant risk management, fraud prevention, or underwriting in an acquiring institution, payment processor, or fintech company.
  • Strong understanding of e-commerce business models, high-risk industries, and payment processing risks.
  • Proficiency in fraud detection tools, risk analytics platforms, and transaction monitoring systems.
  • Experience with chargeback and dispute resolution processes.
  • Familiarity with AML, KYC, PCI DSS, and card scheme compliance (Visa, Mastercard, etc.).
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in SQL, Python, or data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI) is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working with high-risk merchant portfolios (forex, crypto, gaming, etc.).
    • Certifications such as Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), or Risk Management Certifications.
    • Familiarity with AI-based fraud detection and machine learning risk models.

    This is an onsite position and the successful candidate will be required to report to the office Mon-Fri from 9:00am to 5:30pm.
