Senior Legal Counsel provides expert and high-quality legal advice and counsel on pension, employee benefits and compensation plan, equity plan and related employment law matters to the Bank to ensure business results are met in accordance with legislative guidelines and Scotiabank's overall governance. Contributes to the overall success of the Bank's Legal Department in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Recommend and communicate high quality and valued advice and counsel on a broad range of legal matters related to pension, employee benefits, compensation and equity plans, employment law and the application of Bank policies and practices that impact these areas. This includes retaining and managing external counsel in all jurisdictions as required for subject matter expertise.

  • Provide advice and recommends solutions at all levels of complexity by (a) understanding client needs and key issues, assessing risks and providing options; (b) ensuring fairness and consistency in process, policy and practice; (c) communicating clearly and concisely the application of the law in regard to pension, benefits and compensation plans.

  • Provide legal support on M+A transactions as required.

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal business units

  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

  • Champion a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Graduate of a recognized law school

  • At least 8 yeas of private practice or in-house experience with expertise in all areas of Employment Law

  • Membership in the law society of one of the provinces of Canada

Some more information you might want to know:

  • Primarily provide domestic support with support to the Global HR team

  • Provide research, legal analysis, relying on strong experience, expertise and sound judgment
