What is the opportunity?

The Senior Manager, Business Risk Management supports the Director, Business Risk Management who acts as the primary risk manager for their Lines of Business (LoB) and is responsible for building and maintaining a high level of capability relative to risk identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring across the LoB. The Senior Manager, Business Risk Management has a goal of creating a pro-active risk identification and control mitigation eco-system within the LoB by managing risk framework processes to ensure a comprehensive risk identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring across all risk types for the LoB in accordance with the Enterprise Risk Framework

What will you do?

Risk - Planning and Governance:

  • Participates in Enterprise Risk Control Assessment process for the LoB, working with business representatives, ensuring that risk appetite constraints are supported by appropriate rationale factoring business growth objectives, external environment, industry practice and aligned to metrics where required.

  • On an ongoing basis ensures that program and initiative owners appropriately assess impact on risk appetite, including discussion and identification of the need for modeling and other testing where required.

  • Documents and maintains a LoB controls inventory based on RBC policies, New SRO CIRO, OSFI, and Internal Audit findings. Conducts annual review of the control universe to ensure a quality control environment is maintained.

  • Work in partnership with BRMS control testing to onboard key control and develop testing practices and methodologies.

  • Monitors risk culture and capabilities within the LoB, identifies areas for skill development and where required implements knowledge building and best practice sharing to build capability.

  • Assist firm audits, issue identification and action plan management

  • Supports & participates in line of business review of agreements & disclosures as required.

Core Essentials:

  • Implements and monitors processes across the LoB to ensure business representatives and LoB SMT understand, prioritize and manage timely and effective resolution of all known risk issues (self-identified, risk appetite breaches, Operational Risk Management assessment, regulatory, Compliance, Internal Audit, and Quality Assurance). Supports LoB SMT to ensure an appropriate balancing of potential risk impacts to business unit and PBI against LoB strategic imperatives.

  • Identifies opportunities for additional reporting (i.e. exception reporting) and key risk indicators (for the business unit as a whole and within individual business lines) across all risk types.

  • Provide guidance and coaching to participants in the CBRA process, where applicable

    • Ensure appropriate risk identification and mitigation through robust risk discussions

    • Ensure proper controls have been designed and in place for testing

    • Ensure controls in CBRA RTA are aligned to internal controls universe

  • From time to time may participate in RCSAs, RTA's, Heatmaps and management action plans for regulatory and internal audit issues.

  • In conjunction with BRMS and 2nd line partners, ensures compliance to OSFI's E-13 guidelines.

Personal Banking Investments

  • Responsible for active participation with Business Risk Monitoring and Control Centre of Excellence, including:

    • Assessing incoming regulatoryand OSFI review findings to determine which require CB/WM-level resolution;

    • Ensuring timely resolution of risk issues and events that cross lines of business;

    • Supports an effective and streamlined risk reporting hierarchy.

What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • Minimum 10-15 years' experience in financial services sector with 3-5 years experience in leadership

  • Proven business acumen and credibility

  • Strong influencing, collaboration, relationship building and communication skills

  • Strategic mindset, with significant knowledge and understanding of RBC businesses and organization

  • Proven change management capabilities

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, inquisitive nature and comfort challenging current practices

  • A commitment to streamlined and effective processes for maximum business efficiency while assuring appropriate governance

Nice to have:

  • Strong investments/brokerage , Retail banking & or operational experience is a definite asset and preferred

  • Solid working knowledge the financial services regulatory landscape, ideally with several years experience in Risk Management, Compliance or Internal Audit.
