Job Description:

About the role:

This role is part of the Risk and Governance team, a First Line of Defense function within Sun Life Global Investments (SLGI). The Risk and Governance team is responsible for supporting SLGI's governance framework, first line supervision and monitoring activities, due diligence, adherence to compliance and risk policies and the development and implementation of internal controls as it relates to all facets of the SLGI business.

The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for SLGI's sub-advisor due diligence process and reporting activity. Additionally, they will support institutional business development.

This role will report to the Director, Institutional Oversight and will work closely with Institutional Business, Institutional Marketing, Product Development, Legal and Compliance teams. This role may have 1 or more direct reports in future.

What will you do?

  • In partnership with the Director, lead the sub-advisor review and oversight program for SLGI which is comprised of two main functions: sub-advisor due diligence reviews and quarterly compliance certification.
  • Act as a key point of contact for assigned sub-advisors.
  • Demonstrate expertise knowledge of assigned sub-advisors and their governance practices relative to other assigned sub-advisors.
  • Develop risks metrics/indicators and formalized reporting related to sub-advisor due diligence process.

Sub-advisor Due Diligence Reviews

  • Ensure due diligence questionnaires reflect current risk environment and align with industry best practices.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of due diligence questionnaire responses and policy materials provided by assigned sub-advisors and bring observations to Director's attention.
  • Drive review of assigned sub-advisors to identify any issues as well as best practices to have effective on-site visits.
  • Actively participate in on-site due diligence meetings with sub-advisors noting key findings that will be presented at internal SLGI committees.
  • Identify, evaluate, and monitor material events and emerging risks for assigned sub-advisors and bring observations to Director's attention.

Quarterly Compliance Certification

  • Manage quarterly subadvisor certification process including the escalation and initiation of corrective actions to the appropriate internal team(s) and/or committees.

Other Work

  • Support the Director, Institutional Oversight, in supporting the institutional business with product development, sales efforts and marketing.
  • Support the Risk and Governance function in defining and achieving departmental initiatives as well as maintaining and enhancing relevant controls and procedures.

What do you need to succeed?

  • 7-10 years of experience in the Investment Fund/Asset Management industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Asset Management/IFM operations and investment selection processes including fund of fund structures.
  • Knowledge of Canadian securities laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Functional knowledge of NI 81-102 regulatory framework, compliance, and investment systems for mutual fund companies.
  • Knowledge with various public markets asset classes, investment instruments, and their market dynamics and risk characteristics
  • Skilled communicator and listener, capable of leading a discovery, asking succinct questions, distilling matters to their essential elements and understanding industry terms and concepts.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and organizational skills, with a positive attitude and proven ability to prioritize and influence others to obtain desired results.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ideal candidate will have experience in a risk or compliance role within a financial services organization, consultancy firm, or regulator.
  • Understanding of sustainability and ESG; experience developing sustainability initiatives & content would be an asset.
  • Post graduate work is highly desirable: MBA, MA, CFA or CPA.
  • Bilingualism (French knowledge) is an asset.

  • Some domestic and international travel may be required (Canada, US, Europe, Asia).

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
