We are looking for a Senior Underwriter with experience in merchant acquiring or payment processing. The Senior Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating and approving merchant applications, assessing credit and fraud risks, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and industry standards. They will play a key role in onboarding and monitoring e-commerce merchants for an acquiring institution, ensuring a balanced approach between risk mitigation and business growth.

This is a permanent full time position working onsite at out Toronto Office along Leslie Street. Qualified candidates based in Montreal can be considered and will report to our Montreal Office.

How you will contribute:

1. Merchant Underwriting & Risk Assessment:

  • Evaluate merchant applications for acquiring services, assessing creditworthiness, fraud risks, and financial stability.
  • Analyze business models, transaction volumes, chargeback ratios, and regulatory compliance of e-commerce merchants.
  • Perform due diligence, including Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and sanction screenings.
  • Assess high-risk industries, including subscription-based services, gaming, forex, and crypto businesses.

2. Fraud Prevention & Compliance:

  • Monitor transactions and chargeback trends to detect fraudulent activities and potential money laundering risks.
  • Ensure compliance with PCI DSS, AML, and other regulatory requirements for payment processing.
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to mitigate risks related to high-risk merchants.
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes, industry trends, and card network rules (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.).

3. Portfolio Management & Risk Monitoring:

  • Regularly review merchant portfolios to identify emerging risks and trends.
  • Recommend risk mitigation measures such as rolling reserves, transaction limits, or enhanced monitoring.
  • Work closely with risk and fraud teams to improve underwriting policies and fraud prevention mechanisms.

4. Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work with sales and business development teams to ensure a balance between risk appetite and revenue growth.
  • Coordinate with technology teams to implement underwriting automation and AI-based risk assessment models.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior underwriters on risk policies and assessment methodologies.

What you bring to the table:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in underwriting, risk management, or fraud prevention within merchant acquiring or payment processing.
  • Strong knowledge of e-commerce business models, payment processing risks, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, financial statement review, and risk assessment tools.
  • Familiarity with card network rules (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), PCI DSS, and AML regulations.
  • Experience working with underwriting systems, AI-driven fraud detection tools, and transaction monitoring platforms.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and decision-making ability.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience underwriting high-risk merchants (e.g., digital goods, crypto, gaming, forex).
    • Certifications such as Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
    • Knowledge of ISO/MSP models, payment gateways, and chargeback management.

      This is an onsite position and the successful candidate will be required to report to the office Mon-Fri from 9:00am to 5:30pm.
