Hunter McCorquodale is a Managing General Agent and Lloyd's Coverholder whose core mission is to develop, distribute and underwrite unique Special Risk Disability, Accident and Contingency products, providing solutions to insurance advisors whose client needs cannot be fully satisfied by traditional insurance markets. As the Senior Underwriter, working alongside the Manager, Underwriting and Claims Services, as class underwriter for Lloyd's Disability, Personal Accident and Contingent Contract Protection insurances. The role will be an integral part of a small yet, robust underwriting team with a high degree of authority granted under our Lloyd's binding authorities. The Senior Underwriter's medical and financial underwriting confidence and abilities will be relied on heavily to make sound commercial underwriting decisions in respect of complex cases which, for the most part, would be considered uninsurable in traditional markets due to high limits, medical, life-style or risk history. While building relationships with Lloyd's Underwriters and other external underwriting consultants in complementary product lines, your expertise will be called upon to assist in overseeing and refining our underwriting and policy issue procedures.
How you'll make an impact
- Manage a portfolio of inforce business, providing timely renewal quotes and overseeing the renewal process from quote to issuance.
- Review new business applications and recommend medical and financial underwriting strategy.
- Review incoming requirements and correspondence, keep clear and concise underwriting notes and recommend appropriate next steps to Client Service Associates.
- Refer cases to external underwriting consultants as the need arises while managing underwriting costs.
- Make sound and competitive underwriting decisions to ensure profitability of portfolio.
- Consult with sales team to ensure new business quotes are appropriate and reflect an aggressive, but sound assessment of risk.
- Deliver outstanding service and expertise while answering claims and customer service queries.
- Participate in the building and development of the HM Special Risks Underwriting Manual.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and developments in underwriting and underwriting technology.
- Build strong internal and external relationships to assist in the management of key accounts.
- Engage in project work as required for product development or refinement.
- Adhere to required legislation in regards to safeguarding the privacy of client information, conflicts of interest, anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist funding legislation.
- Participating in industry, National Account or MGA events to promote HM products and improve brand awareness and industry presence, as required.
About you

- You bring over 5 years of demonstrated ability in underwriting with a blend of financial and medical underwriting experience.
- Knowledge in underwriting living benefits insurance, particularly focusing on disability and personal accident coverage.
- Familiarity with high-income replacement top-up insurance products is an asset.
- Experience in adding a Lloyds binding or willingness to learn.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and assess medical evidence and financial statements.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
