Job Description:

Treasurer and Head of Capital Planning

Position Summary:

Reporting to the SVP, Capital Management and Investor Relations, the Treasurer and Head of Capital Planning assumes responsibility for global cash management, treasury operations, capital structure, capital planning and analysis, and overall company capital management.

Leadership and Vision

Provides guidance to the Treasury and Capital Management team in developing and executing enterprise-wide strategies to optimize shareholder value by:

  • Enhancing organization capability through strong, capable and innovative leadership.
  • Providing leadership, direction, and vision for the Company's capital and compliance management framework and key processes and communicate these throughout the organization to help achieve the company's overall long-term goals in the global financial services environment.
  • Communicating and gaining commitment to strategic priorities through strategy interpretation and employee engagement.
  • Act as a key resource to the Chief Financial Officer and function at a strategic level, contributing to the success and growth of the company.

Business Operations and Resource Management

  • Motivate the team to realize their potential and provide optimum results, and continuously assess and upgrade staff and provide the opportunity for rewarding career paths.
  • Responsibility for optimizing the company's cash liquidity position and capital position including assessment and recommendations to optimize the overall cost of funds, while maintaining prudent capital levels.
  • Lead and responsible for the company's capital plan, including assessment and recommendations of capital position, deployable capacity, corporate capital management activities such as share buy backs and dividend increases, insight into drivers of sources and uses of capital, overall monitoring of capital across the organization and cash against plan (and to developing recommendations as required if we are off plan)
  • Sponsor of the Company's Capital Risk Policy, including the global capital policy and capital management frameworks and global capital allocation methodology
  • Oversee local capital management through participation on Business Group Capital Management Committees as a standing member
  • Coordinate with the Capital Markets group on the structuring and issuance of the most appropriate funding instruments, both in Canada and internationally, that optimize the company's capital structure and balance sheet.

Governance, Compliance and Risk Management

Oversees Treasury and Capital compliance with all applicable governing legislation, regulations, directives, policies or industry association guidelines by:

  • Developing, documenting and communicating policies and requirements enterprise-wide.
  • Periodically reviewing policies and practices to adapt to new legislation or changing business activities.

Representation and Company Image

  • Liaise with OSFI on capital matters, including lobbying efforts with respect to the development of the new capital regime

Specific accountabilities include:

Company Capital Plan (SLF) including:

  • Managing total company capital adequacy
  • Strategic insight into capital and cash generation ability of the Company
  • Manage overall capital activities through dividend increases, share buy-backs etc.
  • Manage cash positions at SLA and SLF
  • Optimize funding of acquisitions

Capital Risk Policy and Capital Management Framework

  • Sponsor of Board approved policy
  • Responsible for the oversight of capital management activities at the BG level in support of the policy, including the local policy framework
  • Accountable to the ERC and RC on capital management activities
  • Accountable for the global capital allocation methodology for the company (FMM) and recommended changes; requires vision across Risk, Finance and Actuarial

Global Treasury Function

  • Responsible for cash management, payments, short term liquidity, account reconciliation, bank services across Canada and US
  • Owns Treasury technology (maintenance and upgrades) for execution of function
  • Ensures a strong control, compliance, and business continuity environment for all global treasury services - Owner of the Business Continuity Plan for Treasury
  • Company representative for all banking relationships across Canada and US, including some Asian businesses (e.g. HSBC Vietnam, BoA in Hong Kong etc) - reviews global accounts with banking executives and directs future work/choose partners
  • Execution of all Credit Authorities as approved by the Board; execution of lines of credit, execution and maintenance of parental guarantees of capital

Regulatory Capital

  • Responsible for available capital components of LICAT
  • Standing member of management attending Risk Committee with quarterly deliverables
  • A listed company insider, with holdings disclosed externally
  • Senior Treasury sign-off on RFAs
  • Board member of various internal companies for movement of internal funds
  • Partners regularly with tax on internal structures

Experience

  • 10+ years as a senior finance executive with increasing responsibilities.
  • Expertise and experience in treasury and/or capital management.
  • Stakeholder influence and impact both internally and externally.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills so that strategy and vision can be effectively communicated internally and externally.
  • Deep financial acumen.
  • Proven track-record of delivering results in a complex environment.
  • Experience leading large teams, inspiring people and connecting them to a vision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing talent.
  • Skilled at creating alignment and partnerships both within functions and across divisions.

  • A driver and thought leader, who can successfully initiate and execute on business plans.
  • Ability to articulate a big picture view, translate it into tactical deliverables, and drive outcomes.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
