Purpose

Provides strategic direction, leadership and oversight for the Special Accounts Banking function for the International Business Banking portfolios, ensuring operations are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Accountabilities

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Ensures that risks are identified in a timely manner, once identified appropriate action is taken to maximize recovery and minimize risks, and ensure that the business model is continually improving.
  • Contributes to the profits of the Bank by ensuring successful management of a portfolio of problem credits. These credits include loans and other products (e.g. trading, cash management products) that have been extended by the Bank.
  • Manages client relationships, as lead relationship manager for SAM files, and develop and maintain a network of relationships with professional advisory firms and other financial institutions.
  • Ensures that the existing portfolio is maintained at a level of acceptable quality and risk by:
  • regularly monitoring the assigned portfolio and approved credits on a geographic, industry, and customer / product basis, ensuring adherence to condition of credit, identifying issues and taking remedial action in a timely manner;
  • alerting senior leaders to unsatisfactory trends and recommending suitable courses of action; and, monitoring adherence to regulatory and internal policies as applicable.
  • Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank's risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank's risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.

Dimension

  • Authority/Decision Making/Direction received:
  • Manage a team of Toronto based staff covering portfolios in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as shared reports for the PAC SAM Department Heads.
  • Lead SAM Banking units across Latin America and the Caribbean,
  • Responsible for the IB Watch-list, GIL and PCL (Stage 3) at a divisional level, ensuring that the portfolio aligns to the Bank's risk appetite and risk tolerances.
  • Contributes to development of policy, process and other issues related to the operation of the division, with reference to superiors as required.
  • Authority to follow-up on action taken by management in response to identified issues and related recommendations involving Special Accounts Management.

Education / Experience / Other Information

  • 10+ years in managing work-out strategies and collections in stressed debt loans and assets in the commercial and corporate segments.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Bank's lending policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Experience in assessing complex corporate and capital structures, legal documents and exposure to derivatives
  • Strong credit skills (+5 years) that enables individual to identify forward looking risks and adequately mitigate them.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with senior level executives and to manage relationships with different stakeholders (i.e. Regulators, banking, audit, legal, treasury, compliance, capital markets, etc ) in different international jurisdictions.
  • Exhibit strong work ethic, attention to detail, critical thinking, initiative, and resourcefulness and team focus.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure in a fast pace environment with multiple tasks.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
