Job Description:

Sun Life's Defined Benefit Solutions (DBS) business develops and implements innovative de-risking solutions for defined benefit pension plans. The Actuarial Associate, Strategic Initiatives supports this growing business and reports to the Associate Director, Strategic Initiatives, Defined Benefit Solutions.

What will you do?

Strategic Initiatives is a dynamic project-based team addressing diverse challenges and developing innovative solutions for complex, open-ended problems with self-imposed timelines. The Actuarial Associate will have the following accountabilities:

  • Tackle complex financial and operational challenges in managing DBS' inforce group annuities, collaborating with Structuring, ALM, Valuation, Risk, IT, and Operations teams

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance member experience, addressing pain points and improving satisfaction

  • Leverage data analytics and technology to solve strategic business problems and uncover new opportunities within the existing portfolio

  • Report on progress and outcomes of Inforce initiatives to the DBS Inforce Lab, highlighting problem resolution and value creation

  • Identify and address challenges in DBS' growth strategy, developing innovative solutions through collaboration with internal partners

  • Support investigations into how to differentiate DBS' product offering from that of its competitors

  • Support the implementation of promising feasibility studies by partnering with other DBS teams

What do you need to succeed?

  • Strong technical, analytical and problem solving

  • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity thinking about the "bigger picture" and a willingness to challenge the status quo

  • Highly motivated individual who can work independently and perform research in unfamiliar areas

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex technical concepts in both a written and verbal manner to non-actuaries

  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships

  • Ability to manage/prioritize multiple projects at a time

  • Achieved or working towards an actuarial designation

  • Previous knowledge of pension-related topics is an asset

  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
