Job Description:

The Underwriter is responsible for the individual assessment of evidence of insurability for applicants' requesting personal health, life, critical illness insurance sold through Sun Life Advisors and through our direct to client application. The individual would conduct a review of complex medical and financial information to determine the classification of risk exercising sound and accurate judgement.

As a member of the team, the Underwriter communicates with various sources, assesses evidence of insurability and executes underwriting decisions, adhering to quality and service level standards.

What will you do?

• Provide technical expertise in assessing morbidity and mortality risks using an individual underwriting methodology

• Interpret business financial statements and tax forms to calculate earned income

• Work independently on complicated applications within approval authority

• Communicate directly with applicants and benefit administrators on underwriting decisions

• Handle difficult phone calls from applicants who have been declined or approved substandard for insurance coverage

• Provide support in implementing continuous improvements

What do you need to succeed?

• Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada and worldwide

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to be persuasive in negative situations and write clearly and informatively

• Well organized individual with strong analytical skills, excellent problem solving ability and attention to detail

• Comfort with ambiguity; track record of success at turning vague information into sound underwriting decisions

• Completed or working towards Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) or Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) is an asset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
