About the role

The Sun Life Health (SLH) business within Sun Life Canada is a leading provider of Group Benefits and Health Solutions. A market leader in the advancement of workplace mental health across Canada, through the introduction of new tools such as Lumino Health Virtual Care's Stress Management and Well-Being program providing members access to mental health and medical specialists 24/7. SLH is seeking a Director, Management Insights, Analysis & Reporting to join its fast-paced and energetic Finance team.

Reporting to the AVP, Management Insights, Analysis & Reporting, this role provides an opportunity for a highly motivated individual to develop a strong understanding of the SLH business while directly supporting achievement of its growth targets.

What you'll be doing

The incumbent will be accountable for leading a team responsible for the coordination, analysis and delivery of monthly and quarterly management reporting for the Sun Life Health businesses. This role directly supports building the earnings and forecast results narratives enabling senior management to understand results.

As part of this role, the incumbent will also work directly with the Sun Life Health product team by establishing the necessary Financial Reporting processes, identifying required infrastructure and controls to support the businesses growth aspirations.

The individual in this role is a key contact for all management reporting including and must have the ability to collaborate effectively with leaders across a variety of functional areas. The successful candidate will be a proven team leader and practical problem solver with the ability to identify and implement innovative solutions. The candidate will lead a team of 5+ individuals that support the Management Insights, Forecast and Reporting processes.

Management Insights

  • Champion the integration of further data driven insights into the reporting and forecasting functions to enhance collective understanding of the business and support leadership decisions
  • Support a variety of miscellaneous forecast and reporting asks with the aim of providing analysis in support of decision making

Forecasting

  • Lead the monthly SLH earnings forecast process by coordinating across the various functional teams that provide inputs into results including but not limited to:
    • Actuarial Valuation
    • Actuarial Pricing
    • Accounting
    • Expenses
    • Operations
    • SLH Business ie Market Development and Business Development
    • Asset & Liability Management
    • Taxes
    • Financial Planning & Analysis
  • Partner with stakeholders including Canadian Finance, Canadian Actuarial and Corporate to deliver in a timely manner and facilitate a continuous dialogue so as to avoid surprises
  • Streamline and optimize forecast processes and deliverables with the objective of enhancing timeliness and accuracy
  • Further enhance the forecast earnings explanations by building narratives in the context of the business drivers

Reporting

  • Lead the creation of the SLH Quarterly Business Review (QBR) results package by coordinating across the various functional teams for presentation to Business Leaders and Canada Leaders
  • Lead the Sun Life Health Management Reporting function including preparation of the Life and Health Fund
  • Lead the streamlining of reporting processes and consider automation opportunities
  • Track and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) against Plan and prior periods
  • Support monthly updates to Finance and Business leadership on results
  • Act as the key contact for stakeholders and leadership follow-ups on monthly/quarterly results, forecasts, Monthly Business Summaries, Reporting and ad hoc asks
  • Identify and develop relevant dashboards and metrics to assist in the monitoring the evolving business
  • Support the Financial Planning & Analysis team by providing feedback on Business Plan and Strategic Plan and challenging inputs and assumptions
  • Support competitive analysis reviews alongside other functional leaders within SLH
  • Provide ad- hoc support and work on special projects as required.
  • Support certain accounting initiatives such as ad hoc analysis and memos and impairment assessments

What you'll need to succeed

  • Professional Finance designation with 5+ years of experience in financial management leadership roles
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Attention to accuracy and detail
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented and flexible to changing priorities and timelines
  • Ability to influence business partners including those within Lumino Health and Canadian Finance
  • Strong ability to understand large volumes of data and build a results narrative into key messages
  • Proven technical, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experienced people manager with strong interpersonal and coaching skills
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively lead change, develop and mentor team members
  • University degree in business or finance
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • Experience in project management, Financial Reporting and Process Optimization
  • Experience working in the insurance industry or a large financial institution
  • Experience interacting with senior leadership on a regular basis
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
