Job Description:

The Risk Management Centre of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic business partner supporting Canadian & Business Unit (BU) leadership in meeting our Client for Life goals by providing comprehensive understanding of risk and compliance, and contributing innovative solutions to manage risk.

We partner with Canadian leadership as well as second line of defence Risk and Compliance stakeholders to assess operational risks, enhance control frameworks, provide oversight on risk policy requirements and ultimately enable the business to evolve while maintaining risk within appetite.

As Manager, Operational Risk, you will manage a comprehensive portfolio of risk activities and will be a key point of contact for business leaders and second line of defence stakeholders to identify, assess and manage operational risks within the portfolio. This role will support the Group Retirement Services (GRS) line of business.

What will you do?

  • Manage the intake and prioritization of business practice reviews (BPRs), including identification of new products, processes, providers, and consulting on operational risk and control effectiveness.

  • Chair or coordinate Business Unit Risk & Compliance Committees and other relevant forums.

  • Provide reporting on key risks, policy non-compliances, risk and compliance assessments, business practice reviews and any issues relevant to BU leadership & Canadian Risk.

  • Lead the roll-out of new and changed risk and compliance requirements by identifying the impact to assigned business areas, providing necessary training and supporting business partners in the design and maintenance of programs and controls to meet these requirements.

  • Support reviews conducted by Internal Audit and Compliance as well as external auditors and regulators.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required as the position includes managing French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

  • Knowledge of risk framework, business specific compliance & legislative requirements.

  • Knowledge of risk management techniques including risk assessment, risk monitoring, control design and control effectiveness assessment.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in risk management or related functions (e.g. compliance, process improvement, audit).

  • University degree or equivalent.; certification in risk management and/or process improvement.

  • Familiarity with SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint ,Tableau; knowledge of RSA Archer is an asset.

  • Knowledge of risk management techniques including risk assessment, risk monitoring, control design and control effectiveness assessment.

Preferred competencies:

  • Background in Canadian Business Unit functions or relevant financial industry experience.

  • Strong partnering and influencing capabilities, ability to effectively foster and manage relationships across the organization to deliver against objectives.

  • Confident verbal and written communication skills, and experience presenting sensitive matters to senior management.

  • Ability to distill complex requirements without oversimplifying or missing critical components.

  • Ability to work independently, with a strong achievement motivation.

  • Ability to manage various activities concurrently, prioritize initiatives, and execute effectively.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
