Job Description:

We are currently seeking a Software Engineering Manager to manage a team of highly skilled and collaborative individuals across multiple geographies, to deliver on our Canadian digital strategy. This position will report to the Software Engineering Director for Canadian IT.

What you will do

As a servant leader, manage structure and people within a team of Java and .NET software engineers.

  • Coach and mentor staff to develop a high performing, highly motivated and engaged team of professionals.
  • Effectively hire and retain talent (full-time, offshore, third-party), with a long-term resourcing focus.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance by providing timely and regular feedback on personal and team goals.
  • Track and monitor financial information for key activities, as required.

Develop and manage organizational expertise within the software engineering discipline.

  • Work with delivery partners to evolve roadmaps with expected outcome.
  • Guide and assist with our digital transformation to deliver on our client purpose.
  • Collaborate with peers to define and evolve standards and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with those standards and best practices.

Develop and manage capabilities of team members through coaching, training, and mentoring

  • Ensure teams have the necessary equipment and tools to successfully meet commitments
  • Promote a learning environment to develop team member skills, aligning with industry trends and organization goals.
  • Build team agility by assessing and anticipating knowledge/skill gaps and driving knowledge transfer and/or skill development across the engineering domain.
  • Focus on the growth and development of practitioners and ensure alignment across the practice.

What you will need to succeed

  • 5+ years of experience in Talent Management - recruitment and selection, onboarding, coaching, performance management and development.
  • Demonstrated management and expertise with both Agile and Waterfall methodologies in a distributed development environment.
  • Software design knowledge and experience with application, data, security and infrastructure is a bonus.
  • Strong technical and business acumen.
  • *Travel may occasionally be required to Montreal, Toronto and/or Waterloo.
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
