What will you do?

  • Assist in developing and participating in ongoing underwriter education
  • Assist in coaching other underwriters with respect to technical underwriting methodology, philosophy and processes
  • Complete and deliver underwriting reviews for all Canadian business units
  • Drive updates to underwriting guidelines and philosophies that in keeping with Sun Life's risk tolerance
  • Participate in various projects in support of our business partners, which may include product development, and underwriting innovation
  • Resolve and learn from escalated cases and areas of challenge
  • Co-sign on cases as needed
  • Contribute to a positive environment through teamwork, and a spirit of innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development
  • Maintain medical knowledge and stay current on underwriting approaches

What do you need to succeed?

  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Individual Life Underwriter
  • Existing Life and Critical Illness signing authorities
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Analytical, and innovative thinking
  • Influencing and negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of medicine and risk factors
  • Ability to work collaboratively with our internal and external partners
  • Proven time management abilities, prioritizing multiple tasks
  • Specialized training: ALU certificate and commitment to ongoing education with a goal of attaining the Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designations Detail oriented and accuracy

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
